View Full Version : Tenba's ProDigital 2.0 Messenger - Large
DEMO

Hello everyone, I just recieved this bag last week Friday, and I figured I would take a few pictures since I had a hard time finding any reviews of this bag. I can't say just yet if I would recommend it, only because I haven't owned it for to long, but so far it seems to have the great looks, and even better build quality I was hoping for.
Tenba's ProDigital 2.0 Messenger - Large (Olive)

2) Awsome easy access..

3) Material on back is very comfy.. Also the shoulder strap is very well padded.

4) 17-40 infront to show size, but because of the angle of the photo the bag looks GINORMIS (don't worry, it isn't).. The bag has velcro inside the flap to keep it from flapping when the buckles arn't connected.

5) Photo equipment with a 15" Widescreen laptop. (can fit 2 flash or a small lens and a flash). Notice the non slip shoulder strap.

I have the medium of this, which is almost identical but just a bit smaller (for 15" laptops) and though it took me a little while, I mostly like it now. I was using a Think Tank Urban Disguise 40 before and its inability to hold a laptop forced me to look elsewhere (should have bought the 50 in the first place but whatever). It was between the Tenba and the TT UD50 but the Tenba was half the price. It's not quite as well thought out as the Think Tank (lots of the pockets seem kind of randomly sized) and the insert isn't as nice as I'd have hoped (i've replaced two of the three velcro dividers with surplus Lowepro ones and would happily do the same with the third, which already has a crease in the foam) but it holds a lot, is comfortable and functional.

Thanks chromewaves, I just looked at the Thinktank Disguise series and they seem to be very well thought out. The price isn't all that bad when you compare what features the bags have over their comp..

yeah, if the Tenba didn't do it for me I would have happily sent it back and gotten the UD50 - but the Tenba does what I need and it looks a little sharper and less like a laptop bag than the Think Tank. It did make me appreciate all the little touches on the Think Tank, though.

I actually tested this bag out. My only grip about this was the fact that you cant' really store your camera in the bag without producing tremendous bulkiness. I had the Tenba representative even show me that it can "fit". Of course anything can fit if you cram it in there.
Aside from the fact that I support ThinkTankphoto, their Urban Disguise series addresses what Tenba lacked.
Don't get me wrong, if you want to carry it using it as a lens changer and laptop carrier as depicted from your pictures, then it's great, but as for me, I need a place to conceal my camera as well when I'm not using it. I don't like carrying a bag around while the camera is always out.

Very nice! Very large though. I'm still stuck on Nanue Pro's Lima bag for a smaller bag or the 5MDH. AS for larger, my 7MDH stick with me and my DIY bag still works. THough nice for carrying a laptop as well.

Maybe you can help me understand something about this bag. I don't understand the deference in sizes between the small and large (is there even a medium cause all I've seen is small/large). But I have a 17" Macbook Pro and it's dimensions are:
Height: 1.0 inch
Width: 15.4 inches
Depth: 10.4 inches
And to me it looks like it could fit in the small!?!?
Which the dimensions on the small on the inside are:
Height: 11 inches
Width: 16 inches
Depth: 5-8 inches
*(bag measured upright/ laptop measured sitting flat)
And the only difference in size from what I can tell between the small and large is an inch in height and width! I'm only concerned because I just sent back the Mountainsmith Capture AT Large which was like a flippen water cooler carrying that thing around. I had almost given up on a laptop/camera bag combination that was slim lined to look good and carry all the things I need.
Which by the way are:
Macbook Pro 17"
Nikon D200 w/AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm ED
Speedlight SB800
Smartdisk Firelight USB harddrive
+maybe disks, notepad, pens/pencils, jump drives, etc.
So maybe you can help me figure out which is best for my needs.
Also could you please tell me where you bought you bag as well? I looked at eBags (http://www.ebags.com/tenba/prodigital_2_0_messenger_small/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=104336) but they were $40 more that if I were to just buy it from Tenba's website (http://www.tenba.com/pc-963-12-messenger-small.aspx).
And I've heard that it doesn't actually come with the camera divider but you have to buy it separately, is this true? Thanks for you time posting these great photos too. I appreciate any assistance you may be able to provide.

Without taking out the tape measure, I can say that 17" MBPs are considerably smaller than their Dell, Toshiba or otherwise Windows bretheren. I've got a 15" MBP that is much more portable than the 15" Dell Inspiron I used to have, particularly in the thickness dimension. The Tenba large is probably capable of toting a large 17" Windows machine but the medium could handle the MBP. My 15" fits with room to spare in my medium.

I was considering this as well, but does anyone know if this can hold the camera attached to the lens (any pictures?) I was also looking at the Domke F-804 or one of the Think Tank Urban Disguise bags. Any suggestions? Thanks.

You can definatly have a body and lens attached, but I don't think a 1D series will fit while attached to a lens..

Digging up an old thread, I know, but does anyone have pics wearing this bag? I just want to see if it seems too big. I'd be getting the small but seeing the relative size of either would help greatly. Thanks!

Bump and also a question for the OP... now that you've had it for a year (looking back at the date, it's been exactly a year -- though ths wasn't intended at all!), how do you rate the bag?

Has anyone tried the large vs the small one IRL? Are there major differences in size and capacity?
I ordered the small one from the closest usable (with a decent website) Tenba reseller to my own country - but this was back on the 23rd of January. It is now Feb 10th, and despite having an email 14 days ago saying they would have it back in stock in 7-10 days top - they haven't even managed to ship it yet.
I have a 15" MacBook Pro so I think the Small one will fit my needs perfectly, but I am getting really impatient with this store... Unfortunately I can't really see any others having the small black one in stock either (who ship to Europe).

I have the small (technically the medium) and it fits a 15" MBP perfectly. The only difference between the medium and large is the width to accomodate the laptop - the photo insert for both is identical.

Really? Wow...only $95 @ B&H. Another consideration to replace my DIY. It's nice but getting old and has lasted me for quite some time. Can't use the Velocity everywhere, wasn't the purpose.
Tenba, Nat Geo, or Domke.

Yeah I am not worried whether it would fit the MacBook Pro - that's why I ordered the small (or medium if you'd like) in the first place. I was just wondering if the so called large version was much different from it. If not, I could consider cancelling my order and just going for the large black one via Amazon or some other decent store.
On that note... I just had a quick look at Amazon.com and the estimated shipping time for their (non-engravable) large black version is 1 to 2 months at best. Geez!
Almost considering to just get it in the green/olive color as pictured in this thread if the black one I have ordered has not shipped by the end of the week. Or perhaps I should just go for the simple solution and get both..

chromewaves answered a lot of my own questions about the Tenba, so I now have one as well. :)
It's a bit bigger than I would have liked -- and for that reason I'm not sure if I'll actually keep it -- but feel free to ask any questions you may have while you wait.

Which size did you get? That's actually what I'm worried about the most. I don't want it to be so big / heavy that I wouldn't want to use it.

I am considering the medium/large Tenba as well but down here in Australia its going for a minimum of $220AU/144.65US which just feels too pricey for my liking.
Do you guys find when stacked with DSLR and Notebook that it becomes too heavy?

I haven't yet thrown everything in, but I can see how it would be quite heavy. There is a LOT of room in that bag -- I can get my 17-55 and 70-200 and body in there and still have room for another 70-200 (or equivalently large lens) and another smaller lens.
I'll take some pictures of this as well.

Will do. I'll send a PM once all three are completed. So now just need to write the Kata 3N1-20...
Oh -- if you actually go to the Flickr, there's one more photo of me wearing the bag (from the side). I think I was at nine images and POTN only allows 8, but I didn't want to break up the review into two posts (no logical breaking point). I might have edited it down to 8, but either way, there is one more pic of me wearing it.

An odd question but just wondering, what happens if you have the bag laying horizontally with the lens and laptop inside and the bag is moved/shaken. Is it possible for gear to slide out of the inserts?
tigerotor77w

I'll try that when I also put my laptop in it this weekend.
I don't think anything would fall out -- the only possibility *might* be the 50/1.8, but again, I'll try this weekend.

With just my 17-55, 70-200, and XSi in there (along with my 15.4" MacBook Pro), it doesn't feel too heavy, no -- but I didn't end up carrying everything for too long. It certainly wouldn't be something I'd want on my shoulder for hours at a time, but the strap did a fairly decent job at spreading it out.
About shaking the bag... unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to go that. Let me take a look tonight.

I just threw the laptop in, put in the 70-200, and added my 50/1.8 (smallest lens I have) in a very, very loose slot. Naturally, turning the bag upside down would cause the 50/1.8 to fall to the opening of the insert, but the only way I could get the 50/1.8 to actually come out of the bag would be if I manually pulled it out. Gravity alone -- shaking the bag quite vigorously -- would not cause the lens to come out. The top flap does a pretty good job of keeping contents in.

Yeah!!
You can fit anything inside this bag.
I used to fit a 30d with 70-200 is, 85mm, 35mm 1.4, kit lens, nifty 50 on front pockets, 3 flashes, 3 AB receivers, dozens of AAA batteries and more little stuff... such as releases, lens pen, filter. . .
Hell. It's strong and never shows any wear.
I'm not a fond admirer of its design and always wanted to sell it. But then, everytime I got a new bag, This guy shows its worth.
My first camera bag BTW. Think I'm gonna keep it and just buy another bag for back up.. . .

Based on the size difference between the 100-400 (don't own one) and the 70-200 (I do own one) I would say yes, but only with the lens hood off or reversed.

Is this the 70-200 F2.8 you are talking about? because that is a bit longer then the 100-400. So the lens fits with the camera attached? Does it stick out or is it flush with the top and it closes normally?

No, it's the f4 lens. It's a bit shorter (0.6" according the the Canon USA site), but fits well within the bag (top closes normally - with an inch to spare - so it would be close). BTW, might as well mention that I think a gripped body would be too wide.

I don`t like or use a grip so that is not a concern. As long as the 100-400 fits. I will check out a local store tomorrow and see if they have it to make sure.

I've always thought Tenbas were incredibly well made and handsome. But both messenger bags are too big for me. I'm 5 feet and I suspect I'd be lugging even the small one. Pity, cause they are handsome bags and I love the colors.

I love the look of the Tenba. I had a hard decision between the Tenba and the Domke F-802. I went with the Domke but I don`t really like it. The designs is really simple and looks cheap. The insert for the camera has velcro but nothing inside the bag it can be attached to so it is really sliding around in the bag. The strap is waaaay to short. I have it set to it`s full length and it really sucks. I am 6`4 and I need a longer strap. And then it has huge 2 front pockets which looks ugly.
So basically I went with the wrong bag and now I want the Tenba. Hopefully my local store has it so that I can check it out first before I buy it.

Got the Large Tenba Messenger this afternoon - great bag. It fits a Lenovo T60 laptop, Canon 50D, fitted with the 18-200mm lens with hood, a Canon 100mm Macro lens with caps, a Speedlite 430 EX flash unit, Battery and the Canon EN Grip with more room to spare. I removed the velcro dividers and built them around the camera sitting flat in the middle (lens up). This way you can leave the hood installed normally or backwards. I prefer to have the hood backwards so that everything is below the height of the dividers. With the camera flat, the screen is protected too. You won't bang the laptop on it if you need to take it in and out at the airport.
With the bag fully loaded, it looks just like your average laptop bag. I don't want to advertise the fact that I am carrying a camera. I will post some pictures in a few days.

I've been killing myself over figuring out what camera bag to get - right now I'm looking at this Tenba Messenger (I'm guessing the large?) and the Domke F-802.
I have a Canon Digital Rebel XSi, a kit lens, a Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro, an old Canon EOS film camera, and a bulky zoom lens (I think it's 70-200mm I don't have it with me at the moment though). The majority of the time I would be carrying just the DSLR and gear but it'd be nice if it would be able to handle the film gear too - it's not a NECESSITY though as I have a really large bag that I can carry it all in.
Any help/suggestions would be great - thanks so much!

If you just want to carry the XSi, 50, kit lens and zoom, I'd look at the Domke F3x instead of the F802. I have both, and in the F-802 I carry 20D (ungripped) with 70-200 2.8 IS (a bulky zoom lens in anyone's book), 5D (ungripped) with 24-70, and a 15-30 Sigma along with a 580EX. That's in the main compartment. One front pocket carries extra cards, batteries, lens cleaning stuff, etc. The other holds a netbook. Sounds a bit like ovrkill for your described needs. The F3x takes a body (gripped or not) with 24-70, a 70-200 and a third, smaller, lens in the main compartment. The flash goes in a side pocket, leaving the other side pocket for a flash and the front one for cards, batteries, etc.

1: XSI+kit, 50, and 70-200 (one in each compartment)
2: XSi+kit, film+50, 70-200
That'll be a tight fit if you also plan to carry a laptop, but it's wholly doable.

Would the F-802 be good to fit EVERYTHING including the film EOS? I'm also planning on purchasing a new zoom lens, so that too?
*correction - the 70-200mm I mentioned earlier is for the film cameraYes, it would.

I discovered this thread by accident. I have to say that I am enjoying the large Tenba Messenger Bag immensely. I find that getting a bag one laptop size larger than the laptop you own is the way to go. Because once you start filling the bag, stresses cause the laptop section to pull around for a less comfortable fit.
The bag carries effortlessly. Even with a full complement of gear. I wimped out - I loved the Olive and brown, but gave in to boring black. :(

anyone know if several lenses plus a prosumer body w/o grip would comfortably fit in this bag?
Bag gets really bulky; makes me want to leave the grip behind.
Turns out I use mine as a briefcase, and stash my g9 or now my g11 in it. It doesn't work well for me as a camera bag. YMMV.

I comfortably fit a 24-105, 70-200 f/2.8 L IS, 50mm f/1.4, (all with the hoods) a 1.4 TC, a small flash, Canon 5D II and a bunch of peripherals, plus on occasion a laptop.
If I owned more lenses than that and wanted to bring them, I'd say the bag gets bulky. With the equipment mentioned above, the bag looks and feels svelte.

Seems like B&H photo did and I seem to recall a video there ( linked to Youtube) as well.
i'm going to pull the trigger on one next pay day... trying to decide which color though. The green matches my personality, favorite watch and most everything else but the black looks more office friendly and I'll be using it for work as well...
I feel pretty confident that my SX20, Laptop, P&S, Flip video, SansaView, batteries ( in a wallet), charger ( both camera AND laptop), card wallet and a few other goodies should fit comfortably.
I'm sure it's been posted, but, I assume the strap is long enough to go around my neck and over my shoulders? My current messenger bag has to be carried like that. If I just carry it on my shoulder it slides right off...

You'll have a TON of space if you want to carry a laptop and three small cameras (even with their chargers). This bag --- even the small --- is larger than it looks. You can check out my review of the small on my "Gear" link; there are more pics in my flickr as well.
And yeah, the strap is long enough to be "slung" over the shoulder.

Great! It'll be used on vacation in May so it'll be nice to have the extra room to throw in a clean shirt and things like that... I'm a heavy sweater so I go through a lot of shirts in the summer... especially since we'll be in the caribbean :o

You won't be able to stand any body with any of the 70-200s mounted upright (i.e. parallel to your torso when you are standing) -- however, if your only two lenses are going to be the 70-200 and 16-35, they will be able to fit if the 16-35 is mounted.

The 1D will stretch the top of the bag a little bit when your 70-200 is mounted. The bag tapers toward the top and the 1D will pull at it some.

FYI / Reference only (re-posted from tiger's review (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=7305941#post7305941))
Well guys, I got mine today (small) and now things are a bit clearer:
Bag size is exactly what I was looking for
Bag is more flexible than I expected
Bag looks much "leaner" than I expected
Shoulder strap is comfortable (even more so than my TT UD35's)
Insert size is perfect
Insert padding is too thin (50% of std) for comfort
Insert velcro concept is silly
Dividers are all but uselsess
Yes, the 50D + 70-200 sticks way out of the insert... :-/
...But fits perfectly in the bag
"Burnt Orange" s/b labeled "Terracotta" or even "Rust"...Tenba lists the depth (thickness) of the bag at 18cm (7") but that is really the worst-case scenario, with the bag stuffed from one side to the other. The bottom "foot" is actually only 13cm (5") and with the bag used to carry a Notebook and some office / school stuff, the bag goes from the 13cm, tapering to a nice 8cm (3") at the top!
Of course, with Notebook & APS-C DSLR (my 50D body measures 12cm / 4.7" from tripod mount to flash shoe) it starts to bulk up from bottom to top. But at this point, it's not better or worse than any other camera bag designed to hold that amount of gear... .
Overall, a great bag, particularly at that price point! The insert itself leaves a lot to be desired, but anyone handy with a hotglue gun etc. would be able to add some velcro where it's really needed. I will use dividers from other bags and attach them higher up in the insert.
A couple of shots to go with the above text. I didn't feel the need to write up my own review seeing as tiger & DEMO have already done a couple of excellent reviews on a now "classic" bag... : - D

FYI, if you have a 70-200 2.8L, it doesn't fit well in the medium size bag.

EDIT
SORRY, I didn't catch the "2.8" ... But it is the same length as my f/4 and it isn't thicker than my body so I don't quite see the problem...
