hello all.

I was wondering if you could comment on the below question:

Given an EF-S lens (my example the kit 18-55 for 400d - non IS version)
is there a quality or ease of use difference between
reversing the lens (assuming that it is possible)
or adding spacers (eg pro-optic for ef-s)

or to do both???

Many thanks for all comments and links.

It's easier to use tubes such as the pro-optics simply because you retain control of the aperture. If you reverse a lens onto the camera body you have to preset the aperture (when the lens is normally attached) and so you end up with a rather dim viewfinder when it's reversed.

thank you !
can you comment in regards to the differences besides ease of use? e.g. IQ, magnification etc..

can you also comment in regards to the difference between those mentioned and the various lens filters you can add? I have the canon S3 IS and have added some filters (raynox 2e 3g equivalent X6, X12, X24) but they are 37mm only. except for vignetting is there an additional consideration?

Thanks again for all and any information.

Think you may be able to get to higher mags with a reverse lens (ie about 3:1) without vignetting - I'm guessing slightly you would be lucky to get to 2:1 with ext tubes without vignetting. Suspect IQ would be identical in both cases. Adding further lens sytems will degrade IQ a bit but I've seen excellent results with the add on raynox lenses around and they make some with a clip on adapter thingy that should fit the kit lens.
