Still experimenting with B & W here. It seems harder with brown dogs. lol
Anyway, here is one of Faith that I like. Haven't got my other dog to sit still long enough. I really like her eyes in this one (she doesn't like the grey on her chin).

Love it! Great photo (or maybe I'm just partial to herding breeds). It would be super strong with a crop of just the face but maybe not as sharp if you have to lose that much of the image.
Haven't got my other dog to sit still long enough.
I think there are two approaches to this. I took my shot first thing in the morning when she was still half-asleep (she is not a morning dog)... the alternative would be to run them out of energy then bring them inside for the shoot.

Katie's only 9 years old but Charlie is the baby in the family at 5 so we call Katie the old girl. She's a sweet rescue, half aussie and half maybe golden. Smartest dog I've ever known.

Hey Julie, the Danes look good in this thread; not sure why the background was still visible in the other one.
Thanks, TheHoff. That's because they were done in a totally different way. These are very PP'd from the get go -- totally created in PS -- not shots with studio lights and backdrop -- #1 & #4 were taken outside the Dane ring at a couple of dog shows, #2 was taken on my back deck and #3 was taken in the breeder's basement. On the other ones, I hadn't done any burning on the background yet. I wanted to see how they would come out of LR. I intend to do some PPing and cropping.

Here is a foster doggie of mine, we rescued him from the streets where we found him pretty beat up and his owners not willing to claim him (yes we actually knocked on their door just to be yelled at to go away). He is now adopted so it all turned out wonderfully! I do miss his furry face around the house:( although the couch is much cleaner now that he's not drooling all over it anymore:)

I wasn't going to post in this thread as I don't usually care for b&w's all that much to begin with and especially not of dogs, but I have to say this shot is simply lovely! I don't know the story behind this shot, but to me it looks really really sad...like he's sitting there "waiting for his master to come home". As a dog lover, this shot conveys to me that wonderful loyalty that dogs have and it looks like he'd just sit that way for days just waiting. I'm sure that really wasn't the case, but to me that's the story this picture tells.
Simply a brilliant shot! Thank you!

Fantastic shot aravena - love the grass you included in the foreground, really makes the shot engaging - and nice looking dog!

Thank's a lot Jim!
That's partially the truth. She was a bit sad because not everyone was home at the time and she likes a full house! She would get up and look out the window from time to time to see if she could spot anyone. Soon took her mind off that with a bit of exercise outside after this shot though!

This looks like fun. There are some gorgeous dog portraits.
oh.. I didn't realize people were posting color now.. aw well... I just made these three into b/w. .. Our border collies.. (except that we just recently lost Sarah Jane to cancer) .. maybe I could have left them as color shots.. since border collies are b/w anyway.. LOL

Looks like a good b/w image to me. It is tough to keep detail on the shadowed side of a dark dog but you did it here.

This is Fergie. She's our 9 year old Yorkie. I don't convert a lot to b&w, so my attempt may not be the best. I suppose I need to do some experimenting.
