Uhm... your white on the first one is a bit grey, did you notice that? I assume that happened after taking the pic ;)
On the 2nd one: I prefer portraits to be focused on the person.

1. You need to improve your focus on the subject.
2. In #1 the microphone really obscures the face of the guy on the right; be mindful of those so you can compose your shots with clear face views.

We all started from humble beginnings - don't be disheartened, practise and learn, read through the FAQ sticky in this forum - lots of great info there.

Can't tell if you used flash, if you did, DON'T.

Good rule to follow is to focus on the eyes, or get more DOF (higher Apperature but hard to do in low light)

thanks for the replies!

this was about my... say, 3rd time trying to shoot this band? using a different lens than i'm used to and they were in a different location within the venue as well. lots of challenges for me that night.

i did not/do not use flash when shooting the band. for picture #1 i snapped the photos JUST AS someone else's camera flash went off.
