I went to Canons web site to download a version of Digital Photo Professional.
I read this:
Digital Photo Professional 3.2 is software exclusively for editing and converting RAW images shot by EOS Digital cameras.
So my question: if I shoot JPEG, then DPP is not a program that I would ever use?

DPP is a RAW converter, so it has nothing to offer as far as jpeg post processing is concerned.

That's true, apart from all the controls on the RGB tab, specifically aimed at jpegs (also available for raw editing too), and including independent RGB curve adjustment. There's also a chrominance noise adjustment available on the NR/Lens tab.
There is, however, some concern about whether or not any adjustments made using the RGB tab cause permanent and irreversible changes to the individual pixels rather than just metadata. In tests I've performed there appears to be no harm done, even with the most aggressive and ridiculous edits, but I did read somewhere to avoid RGB adjustments if possible and stick to the raw tab only.
Regarding raw file adjustments, it should be noted that adjustments made in the RGB tab will be stacked on top of any edits made in the raw tab so you could get some very major brightening, for example, if that's your thing.

Yeah, I should probably have said "nothing to offer that you can't get elsewhere..."
