Yet another CHR thread - I can almost hear the groans from here LOL!

I find this type of rally difficult to photograph. The driving tests are done at relatively slow speeds, and they always look much better on video then they do on a still camera. Thank goodness then, for a couple of very big puddles on the driving line of some of the driving tests.

#1 A very pretty Austin Healey Sprite

#2 A very big Rover 2000

#3 Porker powersliding through one of the aforementioned puddles!

#4 Glorious Alfa Romeo

#5 Sunbeam Tiger, just for Glenn!

The sun made a welcome, if brief appearence and allowed the cockpits to be lit up nicely.

#6 Lotus Sunbeam

#7 Porsche 911

#8 Wouldn't be a classic rally without a Mini Cooper S

All of the shots (apart from the Rover) were taken with a 1D mk II and a Sigma 120-300 f2.8 - I used an 85mm f1.8 for the Rover.

There's a full gallery on my website for those that are interested (link in my signature).

As usual any comments or feedback would be most welcome.

Cheers,

Simon

Thanks Ant. I appreciate your comments. Must admit that I did enjoy seeing that Alfa out - prettiest car on the day IMHO.

These are lovely Simon, I particularly like the effect of the winter sunshine in the final shots.

Now... that Sunbeam in #5. I've seen it variously described as a Sunbeam Talbot, Sunbeam Alpine and now Sunbeam Tiger... I confess I find it hard to distinguish between a Tiger and an Alpine (unless I can hear them in which case there's no doubt) but does anyone have the definitive answer to what this one actually is?

Lovely to see the Rover P6 out to play, I can't recall when I last saw one involved in motorsport of any kind. The Lotus Sunbeam is lovely :)

Great photos Simon. I am glad someone got a good photo of the Rover. Not a very photogenic car but the way the driver threw it about was impressive :)

Number 1 & 2 are my favorite!

Look at that sidewall flex on the rover!

The Gents expression in picture 1 is great! (driver)

It's registered as a Sunbeam Alpine 1725 ;)

Naughty Simon, trying to pass a little Alpine off as a big, manly Tiger!

The entry list has it down as a "Sunbeam Talbot". I assume that's what the Driver put on the entry form but a certain database says it's an Alpine 1725...

Basically, we're no further forward :D

 No, we know what it is. It certainly isn't a Sunbeam Talbot, the last one of those was built in 1954 and looks nowt like that. That has to be a typo. It's either a Sunbeam Alpine or a Sunbeam Tiger, they share the same body shell. If the database says it's an Alpine then I'd be inclined to trust it.

Oooops - sorry about that . I've given myself a stiff talking to, so it won't happen again .

All great shots Simon but I particularly like the ones looking back down the rallycross track.

Did you see Tony Todd on Look North the other night judging the photo competition, they filmed part of it at the circuit.

Cheers

That's the kind of motorsport I like. Body lean, stuff flying, and most importantly, OPPOSITE LOCK.

The elimination of opposite lock from all forms of pro motorsports will lead to it's demise.

Now, to make the jump from curmudgeon to nag, what's up with the lack of helmets and shoulder harnesses?

Nice shots, but they have to get a better car wash !

I know it's a historic rally and no where near as fast as modern vehicles. However, in their day, these drivers would have worn helmets. Why aren't they required to wear helmets for these events?

I know it's a historic rally and no where near as fast as modern vehicles. However, in their day, these drivers would have worn helmets. Why aren't they required to wear helmets for these events?

Because it is not a stage rally as such. The event consists of a number of navigational tests which are done on public roads at an average speed of 30 mph (it's illegal to wear crash helmets while driving on normal public roads in an enclosed car in the UK), and driving tests which are also relatively low speed and tend to involve manouvering around cones etc.

If these cars were competing on a full blown rally stage, then the drivers would be wearing race suits and helmets.

Ah, like the road rallying I did many moons ago in the valleys. Not 'real' rallying just timed navigation events keeping to speed limits.
