Alien bees are the cheap default. Can not go wrong with them for a first time kit.

If you're in the US it appears Calumet Photo has released a new "low cost" strobe kit line called "Genesis" that includes the strobe (200 or 400 w/s) a stand and an umbrella all for a very reasonable cost (starting around $170 for a one 200w/s light setup and $320 for a kit with two 200w/s strobes)
