I've got a 16gb memory card that is probably closer to 15gb's when formatted.
I'm wondering how many RAW + LJpeg's will fit on it? (20D)
Reason: I shoot Jpeg right now but want to start shooting RAW and for my upcoming trip, I figured I would shoot both and then practice my editing on the RAW's when i get home.

I was going to say "Put it in the camera and see what it says" but I see your problem. It says "999". In my experience, I can add 10% to that whatever number the camera says. I usually get ~240 RAW shots on my 20D with a 2G card, so raw only would be about 2000 shots on your card. 1800 might be a good estimate for RAW+Jpeg.

1600...1GB is about a 100-110 pics pending your ISO settings.

take a dozen pictures, put it in your card reader, look at the total size, average and then divide it into the size of the card, that'll be close

I know because I have a 20D and I know how much is on 1GB. :D

Very easy to do if you put in a smaller one, say 2 gig, and see what the capacity is. Just multiply that time 8 to get the estimated capacity for the 16 gig card I guess.
I do have a couple questions though: Will a 20D use a 16 gig card properly? Will it even format the card correctly?
I don't know the answer to those questions and they're important in your case.
I wouldn't shoot both RAW and .jpg though. Just shoot RAW and use Digital Photo Professional that Canon gave you to convert.

I use the 16gb card now and it works fine and will format.
As far as shooting Only RAW....???!!!? Not sure about that one!?
Only reason I'm wanting to shoot RAW is because I'm going to Mexico so I can't Re-do the shot if I miss the WB or whatever, and then I can go back and fix it after I learn to do RAW editing.... I have never shot in RAW so to me, its like going sailing in an iron bath tub!

Yeah, just shoot RAW. You can look up a program on download.com called RAW Import and use that to convert or idk. Just shoot RAW then come back later with questions on what to do. :D
Still, one card. Yeesh, I'd hate to have all my eggs in one basket especially when it's not like you can hop down to the grocery store to get more. Too much of a metaphor?

Understand completely! It took me a while to convert to RAW too. I did it back when I had my 20D and it only took me a few days to change and I'll never regret it. My pictures came out so much better with RAW.
You mention white balance: That's a good comparison because generally in .jpg, your white balance is fixed after you take the picture. In RAW, it's not. You can easily change the WB in DPP for one or all pictures all at once, if you're using RAW. So, you have much more control over WB with RAW.
But, I'm not here to convert you to RAW. Just trying to help with the math!;)

I agree RAW is better and more control, at least from what I've read, but I would just like to have both options (RAW/JPEG)

I won't have All my pics on one card... I will be shooting with four 4gb's and then the 16giger. I'm using the 16gb for RAW/JPEG so it cuts it down to almost what a 4gig will hold so its all the same as me shooting JPEG on a 4gb or RAW/JPEG on a 16gb!? Just more info on there.....

I would be terrified of using a 16GB card, talk about all your eggs in one basket!
I am paranoid enough with a 4GB Card.
Be interesting to know how you get on with the Card though in terms of speed and stability.
What make is it?

Its a Transcend 266x speed... All my cards are Transcend and never had a problem at all.
Why do people worry about using big cards!?!?
I get that you could lose some pics if something happens but I've never had a problem and wouldn't hesitate to fill it to the brim, even with just JPEG's....
PLUS, I'm not putting my whole trip on this card. I'll end up with thousands of pictures over the week I'm there and that will be spread out on 5 different cards.
If I worried about everything that Could go wrong then I miss out on having fun just taking pictures....

There are a lot of variables to this equation, including:
Pixel size
Bit depth
Raw compression
You can only get an estimate for a given camera, at best.

And thats what I was wanting...
I was hoping to get somewhere around 1200-1500 shots at Full JPEG and RAW.

20D - is that a 6mp or 8mp camera? It's 12 bit depth, right?

That should be about 1200 Raw + fine JPEGs, give or take 100. Can the 20D take a 16 gb card? I thought there were some limitations (largest I have is a 4 gig).

16gig card works fine...... 1200 give or take 100?

I just did a statistical analysis of a random selection of my 30D RAW files and the average size is 7.2 mb, with a standard deviation of 0.61. These were all shot at the same ISO, but with dramatic differences in complexity (range of 8.8 to 6.4 mb). JPEGs will have even more deviation, so I think within 100, perhaps 50. It's just impossible to say for sure.

Here, I'll create a list of pics on 1GB card on a 20D ISO 100/1600. This is the closest you'll get to calculating. Pending ISO levels, give or take 200+ because of different situations of lighting.
RAW = 109/97
RAW+JPEG L Ultra Fine = 77/66
RAW+JPEG L Fine = 90/78
RAW+JPEG M Ultra Fine = 87/77
RAW+JPEG M Fine = 97/86
RAW+JPEG S Ultra Fine = 95/84
RAW+JPEG S Fne = 102/91
JPEG L Ultra = 263/208
JPEG L Fine = 526/418
JPEG M Ultra Fine = 443/370
JPEG M Fine = 868/742
JPEG S Ultra Fine = 770/662
JPEG S Ultra Fine = 999/999

OK.... New Idea!
Shoot RAW and also a smaller JPEG file. I will need a JPEG when I get back because we are having a party and I will be playing a DVD slideshow of our trip. I will only have one day when I get back to get it all downloaded and make the slideshow so this will speed things up compared to RAW post processing.
ALSO, I just got the March issue of PCPhoto and they have an article on "double" processing RAW photo's and it really shows how much better it is to shoot RAW and it didn't look like anymore PP than what I do already!?! SOooo, I guess I'm jumping into RAW before I thought I would be....
