how necessary is the tripod mount ring on this lens? It cost about $100. The lens seems pretty light for a "white" lens.

I have it, but don't use it very often as the lens is pretty light and easy to hand hold. Also, I use with a 10D so up the ISO to 200 or 400 to keep the shutter speed high.

I mainly bought the collar to use with the lens when I am also using the 1.4x teleconverter with it, as it then starts to get a bit long and unwieldy.

Another thing to check out is the black collar - I think from the 70-300 lens also fits the 70-200 f4 and is about half the price of the white/beige version.

I have the black ring on my 70-200 f4L - it fits and works perfectly - for about $28.00 less. Look here:

Regardless of what the listing says, the black ring works just as well as the white one on the 70-200 f4L.

Have Fun,

I just got off the phone with B & H!!!!!!!!!!! Ordered the 24 - 70 & the 70 -200 and forgot to order the ring.................I'll give it a go without it and see what happens.

THANKS to everyone for all the help in picking out the lenses.

If you think that is bad, go look at the hoods.

They are ripoffs, thank god the 70-200 f/4 is light enough where you don't really need a tripod ring.

I have learned to love the rings, as I mostly shoot with a monopod, and a quick losen of the ring allows me to rotate the camera any angle I like without messing with other controls. It's the fastest way to move from portrait to landscape, etc.

I wouldn't have bought it for the 70-200f4, but I went with the 100-400L instead, and luckily it came with it!

The f4 feels okay without a ring on the tripod. The f2.8 would be way too heavy but the f4 seems...okay.

The f4 is a very small lens. I couldn't believe it when I saw how small it was. I saw it about a week after getting my 70-200 f/2.8. It seems to be about a third the size. I would not anticipate using a tripod ring unless you really like to be able to switch from horizontal to vertical really quickly which can be nice.
