First time I have played with water (dyed green).. I used my 50mm 1.8 this afternoon.. did not expect any super wonderful shots as I do not have any up close filter or tubes.. but got this one which I really like a lot.

Nice colours. Be careful though, I started off with water droplets and found that it can become very addictive. :)

I can see how it can be addictive... most of my shots came out too blurry to show, but the shapes the drops takes are amazing.. I can see all sorts of figures in them.. I shot close to 250 images just experimenting.. lol I need a macro set up for sure though!

Hope you don't mind me adding one Christel, as it is quite similar to yours. I didn't use coloured water, just a bright orange jacket in the background to provide the colour.

The water was also held in a shallow black bottomed frying pan. I think it is this, combined with the shallow shooting angle, that allowed the reflection on the surface of the water to merge into the background colour.

Thankyou for the kind comments.

This was one of my early attempts with uncoloured water. Whilst I really like the arc of the drops, I think it's let down by the rim of the cup being in view.

Another one from the 'frying pan' series shows how the black of the pan is refracted through the water of the splash to give a good contrast to the orange (well I think so).

Andrew, what height are you dropping your drops from?

As another member suffering from WDS (water droplet syndrome) allow me to share of few of mine ....

The images are hosted in Imagevenue and will open in a separate window, much larger.

I too suffer from WDS, but don't have any "really cool pictures to share." Here is what I have. I don't think they compare to some of the really cool shots shared above though. I hope three isn't too many. I'm not really familiar with posting on someone else's thread, but I most definitely don't want to be rude.

How do you properly focus such a shot?

Not really in the league of some of your guy's shots. Thought I'd share. Used a clear pyrex bowl. Thought it was kind of interesting. Used a EF 50mm f1.8 ii w/ no tubes or filters--dark room w/ strobe light.

i cheat.

i have a 3d ruler that i place in the middle of the splash zone, i then focus on that and aim for that with my drips.

to achieve the mid air collision which is in the second shot, for me it's hard. Some of the pros out there might have a better solution, but for me it's just luck. You need to manually drop the water and time the second drop just right after the other so it colides with the first one as it's coming out of the water bucket. Focusing? I float a piece of paper with print on it where I plan on dropping the water and focus on that. I hope this helps some. I've seen some really sweet collision shots, mine is neat for me because it's my only one and I got really lucky to capture it. There are some out there who know a process to have a greater chance of capturing such a shot.

newb2pro_1day_or_so,
Don't sell yourself short. Your "crown" shots are excellent! I especially like the low angle

Thanks for the tips on the collision shots. As Andrew said ... a little color will spice up the images. You might try simply wrapping the area with a brightly colored jacket, etc. The water will usually pick up the color.

ha. I think friend sounds better. Although fiend fits me rather well as I'm about to ravage through my computer and throw it out the window. I don't know if you've tried focus stacking, but I seem be having the roughest time with it.

Lord V is the resident stacking genius, though many others can help you also.

I'm not going that route yet , though it is on my to learn list :D

LordV is one of the most inspiring people I have ever come across. I take pride in just looking at his work really. I tried a focus stacking of a dremel tool bit last night of a 12 shot stack. It came out alright considering it was 12 shots and I'm not that good at it. It's a wonder how it takes 12 freaking shots to cover a 4 millimeter area of a spherical shape...amazing.
