That is the lens that the 70-200 replaced.

If memory serves right the newer lenses are of much better optical quality. I have a feeling you'd be better off with a NEW IN BOX 70-200 f/4 or 70-200 f/2.8 (sigma) if you need the extra speed.

UMM i believe that this was ranted to be sharper than the 70-200 f4.. I could be wrong but I am weighing the two and that is what i have seen

The 80-200/2.8L regularly gets favorable remarks from the crowd over at Fred Miranda's forum. IMO, it's quite an admirable performer. I cannot personally confirm, but it is said that there is a slight bit of vignetting at either 80 or 200mm (I forget which) on a full-frame camera. It also doesn't have USM and, therefore, no full-time manual focusing. The focus motor is still very quiet, just not silent.

I watched Ebay auctions for these puppies for a long time before winning one for myself. The going rate for a good, clean copy is between $600-700. So, the one listed in the thread is fairly valued, if not also a bit more than a 70-200/4L.

Aparently you missed my point though. A new in box 70-200 f/4 lens is as much as this lens sold for on ebay. Granted it is a slower lens (vs f/2.8) i still think it is slightly better given enough light.

Makes me wish that my 70-200 was black, I think the off white doesn't look as good, the black ones look sexy It would be nice if Canon gave you the option to have black of white like Nikon do.

I owned this lense several years ago. I upgraded to the 70-200 2.8L when the opportunity arose. While it's not quite as sharp as the 70-200 2.8L I currently use, it's a very very good lense. If you need the extra light, don't be afraid to buy it. If not go for the nib 4.0L. The newer lense will be a little faster focusing also.

Remember, the photogaher makes the picture better, not the lense.

I just got the 70m to 200 F4 L and its awsome. Most time you will not use it at F2.8 and its about the same price as the one you are looking at.

Here is a test shot.
