I have had my 20 D for 2 - 3 weeks now and have shot 1000+ pics. I haven't run into any of the problems that have caused the release of the update. My question is, should everyone that has a 20 D do the update or only those owners that have had problems? I'm not too sure about doing the update myself BUT hate sending the camera in and not having it for a while.

Well the camera hasn't had any problems so I wouldn't bother updating it. Don't fix what isn't broken.

The updated firmware doesn't add any functionality to the camera; it only fixes a bug that evidently doesn't affect all cameras. If you're not having a problem, I wouldn't worry about until sometime when (heaven forbid) you have to send the camera in for service. They'll do it then.
Just one man's opinion.

I thought I read that not all cameras would need to be updated with the new firmware.
I could be wrong though since I don't have a 20D.
Just remembering what I have read about it........

Mine has locked up twice over the course of about 1,500 shots now, both during lens change, so I'm not running out and doing the firmware upgrade. More risk than reward there for me.
I did have an interesting 'Err 5x' lockup yesterday, though. Forget the exact number, 51 or 52 maybe? I happened to hit the flash button while I was swapping lenses, and my hand was holding the flash down. It clicked a few times and then displayed that error code, and I had to turn the camera off and on to reset it.

I have had no lockups, I did upgrade to 1.0.4 without problems and still no lockups. As for 1.0.5, I am not sure I will update to that as the only difference from 1.0.4 is correction of the bug that caused some 20D's to die from the 1.0.4 upgrade.

There's quite a few people in dpreview forum now reporting lockups with the new 1.0.5 firmware. I haven't tested mine out at all since loading it on.

I've only had my 20D for a short time .... time enough to shoot 2 high school football games .... but I've experienced NO PROBLEMS! No lock-ups, no dead camera, no dead pixels, no nothing! I've been extremely pleased about that, too, after reading about others having those problems.
So - NO - I am definitely NOT upgrading to 1.0.5 firmware. I agree with Ogrt48, "don't fix what isn't broken."
And right now, mine ain't broken .....

I agree with the others - don't fix it if it isn't broken!
Upgrading the firmware isn't really "dangerous" or difficult (you don't need to take your camera to a service center just for the firmware upgrade), just make sure you follow the instructions exactly. It's best to wait with upgrading until at least a few weeks after the firmware is released, so you can avoid problems like there have been with firmware version 1.0.4 for the 20D - there was a bug in it which caused some people's 20D to become completely unusable. Canon fixed it quickly and came out with version 1.0.5.

Do you think Canon will try to fix the 20D problem from its roots or will they just ship the new ones with 1.0.5 firmware.
(I'm thinking of getting the 20D but I'm not in a hurry).

What do you mean? Is there any difference? The problem with the 20D are the bugs in the initial version of the firmware. There's nothing wrong with the hardware. So if they ship new ones with firmware version 1.0.5, they've solved the problem - there are no other "roots" to solve the problem by.
Probably they will start shipping the 20D with the new version in the future, because it's cheaper than helping lots of customers with locked-up 20D's in their service centers.

Do you think that's the case, because some people are reporting problems even with the new firmware.
Thanks

People will report some problems with virtually all digital cameras. It's the nature of the beast. This is a complex digital device. I've seen the same thing with EVERY digital camera I have owned. Did I have problems with every one? No, but I have seen posts here and elsewhere for models that I own or have owned. My two cents. :)

During last week when those two firmwares were released, I saw no reports of lockups. Then came the weekend and there was a flood of reports of lockups with the 1.0.5 firmware. I don't think the bug is licked, and it could well be a hardware defect, not a software bug.
