I have the lens, and it's a lot of fun---maybe even useful. I also have the EF 14mm f/2.8L, and will generally go to it first if the focal length works.

The 12-24 works very well, although I did notice a fair amount of CA, especially at 12mm, wide open. On the other hand, what should I expect?

I think it's a very good lens, especially because Canon doesn't offer anything comparable. It might be easier to be dissatisfied with it if it had competition. FWIW, it's the first Sigma lens I bought and actually kept.

I like it.

When's the wacky Canon 10-22mm ef-s available? Looks like it might be da lens to have for this stuff. If you can use it.

I'm not interested in any of the EF-S lenses because they won't work on the 1D Mk II. I'm not sure I'd ever be able to get too excited about a lens I couldn't use on both cameras.

I need to decide if i want this or the 17-40. I held the canon the other day nad it's just as nice and smooth as i would expect form an L lens. Makes it hard to go spend that amount of money on a lens because its wider.

Thanks guys. I'm a little verklempt!
It's time to get a wide angle lens now that I dont have a 300D kit, so I'm considering this lens, the 17-40L, or maybe a prime like the 14F2.8, or Sigma 20F1.8.
Decisions, decisions.

If you don't have anything already that covers the range of the 17-40, I'd definitely go that way first. I think you'll find it more useful for typical shooting than the 12-24. You're right....it's an L lens in every respect. The Sigma is not.

Yeah that's a good point. All these EF-S lenses are still really a developing standard. All other Canon lenses you buy are usually long-term investments because they can serve you well through many a camera. However, should Canon go and change the crop factor on their 30 or 40D, that lense may just be a $800 paper weight. Sure you can always resell it, but I'm just saying it's something to consider when buying one of these new-standard lenses.

One of the biggest things is that i dont actually have a waterproof lens yet. It would be nice to know i can go out in the pouring rain without covering my lens up with tape and a baggy

I'm hoping i can get one before january when i'm going up north (to cheeseland). I'd like to get some nice senic shots and i'm not sure my 50mm will work, nor do i want to rely on my warm, soft, broken focus, sigma which is only 28mm which i also dont feel is quiet wide enough.

In the end i'm sure i'll go with the canon, just like i have with my flash and telephoto lens but until i actually click "send" i'm gonna second guess myself all the time

When i got the 12-24 i really enjoyed it, but it's a big and heavy lens. Then i bought the canon 15mm FE for underwater use, and now i use it all the time top side, it's a tiny sharp and fun lens. barrel distortion is acceptable on a 1.6 crop, depending on how you use it and how you point at straight lines

you can see examples with both lens on my website http://underwaterpics.org

some topside 15mm shots : http://underwaterpics.org/list.php?exhibition=45&pass=public

I am looking at a wide angle to replace my Tokina 19-35mm. Have taken some test shot at my local camera shop with the Sigma 12-24mm and the Canon 17-40mm. I preferred the sharpness and color of the Canon over the Sigma and the range of the Canon suits me better.
