My first post here ..
Tip of my hat to Pekka a great program you have created!
Could someone explain the use of the password field in the exhibition editor?
I'm taking it as a toggle on off type of switch .. "public" is on and any other password is off.
Is there more to it that I'm not understanding?
Such as passing in the password as a variable from another page?
Thanks and again a great tool

As far as I understand, the password determines the URL which then is used to refer to the exhibition. This prevents users from visiting unvisible (non-public) exhibitions by just guessing exhibition numbers.
You already had noticed the toggle-like functionality: any password not "public" hides the exhibition from the gallery front page.

The password is for hiding exhibitions from public display. If you se any other pass than public the exhibition is hidden and you can share the exhibition just by sharing the link to the exhibition. I wanted to keep this feature simple.
You need to know the right combination of exhibition id and its password to get in. They are combined in url as
http://photography-on-the.net/gallery/list.php?exhibition=3&pass=getin for easy sharing.
Of course people may leave the exhibition open in a web cafe and browser history may log the addresses (although password protected pages are forced to "no-cache" by EE so they should not be caught by server proxies) -- that can happen with any protection. Log in dialog + cookies can be more secure but for now Cookies are something I will not have in EE as a requirement. Let's see later if something more heavy is protection is needed.
A test: Try getting in into my exhibition id 6 - let me know what is in it! :)
