The question is in topic. Somewhere I read the battery types and I think they were different but still the chargers work for both or so I heard.

They are interchangeable.
With the 20D, you get a BP-511A battery, which is a new version of the BP-511 battery. The only difference is that the new battery has more capacity. Otherwise, they are the same and you can use either type of battery in either camera.

The 300D comes with the BP511, and the 20D comes with the BP511a.
The BP511a just has a bit more mah, so it should last longer on a charge.
However, the batteries for both cameras are interchangable.
I'm using both the BP511 and BP511a in my 20D.

I have the 20D and the 300D.
Both BP511 and B511a batteries and the chargers are interchangeable.

Another quickie on the batteries: When getting new ones, should I charge them for a long time before use or something like that? I don't have the manuals at hand and cannot remember wether that mattered anymore...

no need to prform "initial charging" as with older batts.
after the red light goes steady, keep it in the charger for another hour or two at most thats it.
charge and discharger 4 to 5 times to get full capacity usage of the battery:) also do not totaly drain the battery ever...

I am using the batteries from my ZR60 video camera and they work with my 20D. So for sure the rebel batteries will work fine.
