Hello:
I' still in the market for a P&S. I was going to purchase the G9 but saw Sigma's DP1 posted on a couple of threads. It seems like it will be coming out soon.
Not sure if others are in the same boat as I. But since the DP1 coming out soon, do you think it's worth waiting for or just get the G9?
Thx,
Joe

These are such entirely different cameras that it would easy to recommend getting one of each. If you're only getting one, then get the one whose features match your needs and style.
But I'd wait for a complete review, maybe two, before getting the DP1.

Even though they are different cameras, I read the DP1 is supposed to compete with the G7/G9 so I wondered if others were waiting,
Yeah, the reviews would be nice to see before making the investment. ;)

The DP1 is not positioned to be competition to the G9 at all. It will have a fixed focal length 16.6 mm f/4 lens (28mm equivalent on a full format camera). The G9 has a 6x zoom with the same field of view as a 35-210mm on a full format camera.
As far as I know the DP1 won't even have interchangeable lenses like the Leica M, so it will really only appeal to a small niche market.

Correct. The G9 to DP1 is sort of an apples to watermelon comparison.
The G9 is a more versatile camera by nature of its zoom lens. The DP1 *should* give better image quality although probably not much better in low light (B+W yes, color no - a characteristic of foveon sensors). But as mentioned before, the DP1 has been on the verge of introduction for 2 years now. Best wait and see if it actually makes it out. Either way, it will probably be at a price point quite a bit higher than the G9.

I guess that price point difference is approaching 2:1 since the G9 can be had for close to $400 if you shop around.

True,,, but a few months after the Sigmas release I doubt it will sell for MSRP either. I suspect they will be selling for about $650 for the Sigma and the G9 $389. Still a big difference though..
It would have to drop to $500 for me to consider it..

Yep. I think that is going to be hard for them. The sensor probably goes for a couple of hundred dollars on its own.
