I know basics in PS so know this isn't the greatest in the world. Lots of trial and error but any suggestions or critiques feel free to rip me a new one. I thought about cutting out the team as well but then rememebered that would have ended with my computer being thrown against a wall at great speeds.
Obviously the name was changed....

Thanks, I showed it to the girl and she liked it so guess that's what matters...
Lots of learning to still be done though.

Very nicely done. I have wanted to do something similar. What did you do?

I am always impressed by the guys that can do these fantastic work with PS... very much respect their work. But at the end of the day I still feel subtle and simple works for me. I think you did a great job here.... understandable why the girls like them.

Used Photoshop - CS3 Extended.
There's nine layers...
1) 8x10 at 300dpi canvas to start (black)
2) the basketball net/ball is a photo I took a few years ago at a boys game. Layer - blending options (inner shadow, outer glow, satin) and I know one other thing to it but for the life of me can't figure it out - it got turned blue somehow but I can't remember how the heck I did it as I did it before copying it as a layer over to the canvas.
3) To cut out the individual picture went to Filter on top - extract and followed the directions on the how to section under help (how to work with layers and selections - remove an object from a photo). After cutting her out and erasing anything left over blurred the edges a bit so it wasn't as noticable.
4) Team photo was just placed in there and resized once in there (Edit-transform-scale) and then a drop shadow and outer glow in the top menu layer - layer style - blending options (used a lot for the text).
5) the team logo, which I got from the school - erased the background using the wand seperate and then used the rectangular marque tool to select it and copied via layer onto the memory mate (that's also how I copied the two photos over and background photo).
6) Batavia Lady Devils - blending options again, gradient overlay and stroke along with warping the text. Text is Copperplate Gothic Bold.
7) Jessica Alba name - blending options, drop shadow, outer glow, bevel and emboss - Arial Rounded MT Bold text
8 ) Team Captain is just Copperplate Gothic Bold text
9) 2007-08 - blending options, drop shadow, bevel and emboss and is Franklin Gothic Heavy text.

I don't offer a memory mate package but planned to this year - this girl asked for one so said I'd try to work on it. Of course once that happened another girl wanted one as well...so just trying to learn as I go.
We do have more than a few members on here who do spectacular work, www.propointmedia.com (http://www.propointmedia.com), for one.

I'm thinking this one looks better - blame Sledhed as he took it from the above to this...which looks a lot better IMO. Thanks Chris!

I like this one, the first version has multiple fonts while this one
seems a little crisper... The name along the bottom probably works
a little better layout wise as it draws the eye across the whole page
in that "Z" pattern that advertisers often use... I'm not sure I
can see the net but maybe it my monitor...

If I may chime in, you did a fantastic job with the image. The only thing I would change is the location of the team logo "B" and the team captain's name/label. I would center the B between the edge of the canvas and her knee and move it higher, and then place her name and info right off of her left shin. I don't know how I'd change it otherwise without knowing what you originally intended. The text up top just seems a little bit dry to be the first thing you read.

Yes definitely. I think it has a more official feel like that. Excellent work.

Thanks Mike. Who's the tall dorky looking guy in the back row?

Chris - I don't know but I heard he's one hellova coach and should be coaching a higher level. You hear that Isaih Thomas, I hear you're looking.
Porkponey - I printed both versions and both girls chose the second version - they said they didn't like how everything was organized in a straight line. Went to print today so hopefully final product looks as good. The thing she loved most though was being "cut out". Interesting...
