Just wondering how the G9 IQ compares, no I know it's not going to be the same but is it very/slightly/not really dissapointing in comparison if you also have a5D???

the G9 really is noisy above 200 iso. So because owners of 5D's (I used to own one) are used to an exceptionally clean photo, you might be really disappointed. The g9 is great for a p&s. Has good colors and I use it a lot when I've got long lenses on my dslr's...but it's not great using higher iso's...
The thing is, they just really aren't comparable. If you are looking for a nice P&S to use (not in low light, but there is not any P&S that I'd say has good high iso IQ) for walk around when you don't want to use your dslr, I'd highly recommend it.

Thanks _ I hear what you'resaying about the high ISO, but no I was jjust thinking for walking round where a DSLR would be a bit obtrusive
Can you conjure decent bokeh at the long end or is that too wishful thinking. Nothing outrageous like the 85L etc, I don't men that , but just enough to isolate from the background wide open(ish)?

you can if you use the macro mode improperly :)
It can make nice bokeh but you have to be somewhat close to your subject to do it.
I tested that here:
http://LC-images.smugmug.com/photos/218437787_zBSDm-L-1.jpg
but found out that you can use it in real world situations to create bokeh, this was outside at a train exhibition:

In most conditions you won't get much more blur than this (without using Photoshop to simulate it)
F4.8
44.4mm (max Zoom)
An SLR and a fast lens is the only thing that will get you what you want..

I think that for what they are, the G7 and G9 are pretty amazing. If I'm outside in daylight I'll likely shoot at 80-100 ISO and get really nice results and I do have a 5D but for what the G9 that I have is, I'm very happy and much more likely to carry it all the time. I also am starting to enjoy shooting it in the "W" setting which is JPEG Wide format @ I think 4000x2250, on my computer screen it looks great and is really fun to shoot in that format.

Is there any difference between shooting in that mode and just cropping later?

No and Yes, cropping would give you the same size image and you'd get to process in RAW, big difference, but what I've noticed is that by having it in Wide, I think I see differently and that's a fun and usually gratifying challenge.

G9 and 5D, which I own, has obvious differences in output and performance. Not sure why you are comparing two different cameras like that. I will say that the G9 output stands on its own. But when you look at 5D output, it pales in comparison. It's like listening to music. One sound system sound nice, but then you go into another room that has a much better sound system and you suddenly notice the differences.

Im not trying to directl;y compare the different cameras , just wondering how many 5D users enjoy the G9 wiythout feeling the IQ is a let down
very subjective I know;)

I have both but with a good reason, my G9 will be for underwater use. There is very little chance I would prefer the images from the G9 over any of the DSLR bodies & lenses I have owned. I could have before getting my 20D when they came out, but not now.

I have a G9 and a 1D mk II. I bought the G9 for times when carrying or using the 1D mk II would not be possible or practical. Therefore comparing the IQ is almost irrelevant, as I wouldn't have got the shot in the first place if I wasn't using the G9. For me, they are different cameras with different applications.
For what it's worth, I think the quality of the G9 is very, very good. It is not up to DSLR qualities, but really is very impressive. So far I've only tested it up to ISO400, but have been happy with the results I've obtained. A small amount of NR at ISO400 really improves and cleans up the image without too much fine detail loss.

I think if you get people using 5Ds, 1-series cameras, etc. getting a G9, that speaks favorably for that point and shoot.

Thanks for th imputt everyone, and yes obviously the IQ won't be up to DSLR IQ, I never presumed so, but wanted to be sure that those that knew their cameras (i.e. 5D and 1D usrs) rated it as good for what it is:D
That is good enough for me - thanks:lol:

I have a 5D and bought a G9 about three months. Although I now love my G9, my initial reaction was somewhat negative, having been so spoiled by the exceptional IQ of the 5D. However, three things changed my perspective. First, I learned how to better process the G9 RAW images in ACR, particularly in terms of managing noise reduction and sharpness. Second, I got a Lensmate -- keeping direct sunlight from hitting the front of the lens helped enormously. Third, I came to love having it in my pocket all the time and came to just appreciate the G9 for what it is!
I liked this review of the G9 by Nick Devlin. I would love to know how he process his RAW files -- the results are fantastic.

And the grip is essential:

A good place to start in terms of ACR RAW settings for the G9:

The G9 does well outdoors in good light - in these conditions, it will compare favorably to a 5D in terms of crisp images, good color etc... however, if you go up in ISO over 200 or if the light is less then the IQ will degrade very quickly in comparison to the 5D.
You will also find that the images tend to be not as sharp as the 5D (no surprise there) and that there is not as much dynamic range by a lot.
However, outdoors it will do very well and is quite a camera.
Finally, if you shoot in raw and process externally you will get much better results than if you shoot in jpg. The jpg processing of the camera is quite underwhelming IMO. After shooting in raw and doing my own processing, the results are quite significantly better than letting the camera do it.
Here's an outdoor image in just about ideal G9 shooting conditons:

I should imagine a lot of comparisons have been made between the G9 and the Leica rangefinders?

You mean comparing the $400 G9 against the $5000 Leica M8? I'd hope that the M8 kicks the G9's butt! The G9 is good for a P&S, but it isn't that much above the average P&S camera out there. So far, I haven't seen such a comparison.

A preety unfair comparison I agreem but you just never know nowadays the way technology goes in leaps and bounds, not that I want a Leica, particularily, much, ;):p

Wow, thanks for the link, never knew there was a comparison like that done, quite an interesting read. Although I have to say I am a bit surprised with the Indoor - Wide Angle Shothttp://www.thecleverest.com/g9_5d_comparison6_tn.jpg
I mean is everything supposed to be in focus even when the aperture is already wide open at f2.8??

I have both and the G9 is capable of producing very good images in the right conditions as mentioned before.
The 5D with quality glass will give much better results though, which is to be expected but will not fit in your pocket.
If you keep your expectations in check, you will love the flexibility the G9 will add to your photography.

To get blur out of the G9 like the 5D has in that pic you will have to be near or at the full 44.4mm zoom with the foreground and background fairly far apart and wide open. You can get a somewhat limited DOF but you have to be trying pretty hard.

The selective focus in the 5D vs the G9 is largely a function of the much smaller sensor size of the G9 over the 5D. It is characteristic of the P&S cameras, all with smaller sensors, to have a much, much deeper DOF at the same aperture.
