Look at the Manfrotto 680B. Might be the most popular monopod on this forum.

If you are just looking to try one out, and see if it is something you might use on a regular basis, Walmart has one for $18.88. No tilt or ball head, but at that price you can just use it as a walking stick if you do not like it.

I was picking one and have just bought (off ebay!) the Manfrotto 676b. It weighs less than half of the 680b and can still take 4.5kg on it which is plenty for my uses at least... I haven't received it yet though but others on this forum use it and are very happy with it so I am sure I will be, too when it arrives.

Here is a link to the Manfrotto monopods: http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/site/manfrotto/cache/off/pid/1799?categoryKey=BRAND:MN:MAIN:AC:SUB1:AK:SUB2:AX&idx=119&livid=107|117

Another vote for the Bogen 680B. I use mine at the moment with a 488RC4 ballhead.

Do you have to buy a head to go with a monopod? I'm looking at getting one for when I go to Brands Hatch for the A1GP in a few months. Looking at the Manfrotto 679/680/681 at the moment. Would I have to buy something else to actually be able to attach my camera to it? (400D).

(Sorry if this is a silly question, still very new to all this!)

I also use the Manfrotto 680B topped with their 486RC2 ball head.

To Ingsy - if you plan on using the monopod in only one position (monopod vertical, camera aimed horizontally, standing vertically behind the monopod), you can get away without a head on top. However, if you want to change the angle between the camera/lens and the monopod at all, you will need some sort of head. A lot of us find a small ball head like the 486RC2 to be very useful. In addition, a quick-release system - the same system as used on one's tripod(s) - is extremely useful.

Thanks for the info SkipD. I'll have a look at that head - looks like it includes the QR mechanism.
