Hi All
There is a version 1.0.3 firmware update for the EOS 1D mkII, Available from http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/eos1dm2/eos1dmk2_firmware-e.html
This allows the camera to communicate with the new 580EX flash.

When you download it you will be asked for the camera’s serial number.
This is the number on the bottom of your camera (not the body number, but the one above it) outside of the panel with the other information on it.

Good Luck

Hi All

Just finished up-dating my mkII, no problems at all. :D

When you have finished downloading the update, download the pdf file. The instructions within are very easy to follow.

Good Luck

I that the only "fix" in this firmware. If it is I don't think I will update. Is there any more to it?

If you click on the link and read, this is one of the many, many things to read on that page:

Q : Tell me about the changes in the version 1.0.3 firmware.

A : This firmware update fixes/improves the following:

1. Added new functions for communicating with the Speedlite 580EX.
2. A color temperature information transmission function has been added to stabilize the white balance.
3. Reduced noise when shooting bulb exposures.
4. Reduced the noise when shooting bulb exposures (astronomical shots, etc.).
5. Fixed sensor-cleaning operations. Fixed the problem of the shutter not opening if sensor cleaning was performed immediately after taking bulb exposures.

So yes, I think it's definitely worth upgrading.

After loading the file onto the card and inserting it, I just blindly went to the firmware menu and started clicking on what seemed to be the logical choices. Now my camera displays ver.1.0.3 and seems normal in every way. Wassup wi' that?! Heads will roll!!

I did like this bit on the Canon web site:

Do not turn off the main switch of the camera during the firmware updating process. When using household AC power supply, be careful of power failure.

Yeah, if you're going to have a power failure, schedule it before or after the firmware upgrade. I wonder why they didn't mention lightning strikes?

Hi all,

With V.1.0.3 the 550ex flash is getting a little better about exposure with 1DMKII ? Someone had tested it ?
To me something is getting bit different, i.e. I can use +1/3 of FEC instead of +2/3 or +1 in P mode, but for now is just an impression. I must do something more scientific.

Thanks
Dome
