ah ha. Well I absolutely love jeans on females :) especially tight ones. Shes a tall girl. I think ill get her to push out the hips to one side, hands on hips, strong powerful stances. I'm not aiming for a documentary style. Those are good examples for stances. But in terms of a vision its a little bit different.

Well the shoot is tomorrow, should be good. Ill get the shoot done in an hour and then quickly get to work on them. Get some good ones onto flickr. Hopefully the light is nice and clean tomorrow.

Noob question time: Should I still stop down to F4 - 4.5 for this type of shooting? Focus point right on the eyes again I guess.

Might be some people interested in this:

Its time to celebrate an event fifty years in the making! Forest & Bird is marking the 50th anniversary of the Manawatu Branch. To celebrate we have New Zealand’s leading wilderness and wildlife photographer, Craig Potton, giving an illustrated talk “New Zealand Through the Lens” at the Regent on Broadway. Craig is an excellent and entertaining speaker. He does not frequently give illustrated talks in New Zealand, making this a rare if not unique opportunity to see our most iconic images on the big screen in Palmerston North.

The theme of Craig's talk will be our great wilderness and wildlife treasures saved over the past 50 years, and treasures worth saving over the next 50. He will screen a selection of his photographs from New Zealand, the Antarctic, and the Tropics. Of course you’ll invite your friends along for this great evening. As a bonus they will see the show for free if they join the Society on the night, as they will receive a $10 discount on their Society membership.

The show will be at the Regent on Broadway from 8 pm on Tuesday 11 March. Admission ($10/$7 student) may be purchased from Bruce McKenzie Booksellers in Palmerston North, or Svensen’s Photography, Feilding. Admission at the door will be available from 7:00 pm for $12/$8. We've deliberately kept these prices as low as possible, to make this a fun and affordable evening. Thanks to our sponsors PN Community Arts Council and CCNZ, Bruce McKenzie Booksellers, ePics, and Svendsen Photography. There will be a spot prize giveaway including a signed Craig Potton book.

For a sneak preview of Craig’s stunning photos, have a look at www.craigpottonphotos.co.nz You are most welcome to pass this notice on to interested friends and photography enthusiasts in the lower North Island.

Hi all

Good to see fantastic shots still flowing in this thread! :)

a link I found in flickr (doco, photojournalistic type photog) http://www.flickr.com/photos/61966933@N00/sets/72157600003993988/

this set is specially my fav since its a set taken in my home country philippines - manila. i have seen these kinds of things (people doing drugs on the street corner, etc...) whilst growing up, was a normal part of my life. just shows how sad the reality is and what its like living in this third world countries.

i am planning a trip back to the motherland this year after 18 long years (never been back since we migrated). i am hoping to fit in at least a day or two doing some "serious" street photogs (appart from the touristy snapshots i will be doing loads of), but i don't think i can manage to gather enough balls to do what this guys has done or even venture out to places this guy has been... most of the pictures in this set are taken from the really rough area's in the phils.

Think the girls have covered everything you need Matt. :)

Two things: Empty space in a model shoot is not something to be afraid of, using it right can create great tension across the photo just like space in a landscape. And lastly, are you getting paid for the job? If you're shooting her so she's got example shots to show the jeans supplier and then she goes out and does the proper shoot fair enough, but if you're taking photos for the supplier, you should be getting cash.

I think he got the phones while he was in America...

YOu can get them from Parallel Imported shops for 3x the price at the moment already unlocked.

I'm looking at getting one at the moment but trying to get one from someone in America as it works out to be only $490 NZD instead of $1000.

Then I'd save the cash. Lenses don't go wrong all that often, I think you guys have just had a bad run. Make sure the s/h one is completely minty, do some focus tests etc and go with that. For as many people who need to claim on the warranty, there's another hundred or more who are using ten year old L lenses all day every day...

And $350 could buy a lot of nice beers and cocktails! :p

My thoughts too.... Progear said they've not heard of any of those lenses having anything wrong with them..

Our 17-55 where the IS died is apparently a common thing and was almost out of its warranty when it happened anyway so we would have been in the same situation.

With the lens being used in a business there is also insurance etc to cover if something happened :P

My mate Mark from back in the UK who does all the motorsport work (and anything else going during the week) uses a second hand 70-200 and a second hand 300 f/2.8L (non IS), the latter of which when he bought it looked battered to hell and back, paint of it and alsorts. Despite them both doing something stupid 40k shots a year, plus whatever went through them before he bought them, they work flawlessly. And they lead a pretty hard life.

In my experience, you are absolutely right. When I first started shooting motorsport, many of the others decided that I had no idea what I was doing, based solely on the fact that I was shooting with less-than perfect gear (You know, MKII, 300 F2.8 etc).

At least now when I use decent gear they can see that my crapiness had nothing to do with the gear I was using.....

But it's funny, it's like any pi**ing contest really.

that is because people think it's a pissing contest. but the race really is only with oneself.

While a good photographer knows what makes a good photo and how to pp a photo. one of the other things is knowing when your vision is right for you regardless of what others think..

that's why asking for critique is pointless when you are trying to develop a style.

I don't mind a good critique, sometimes you get pointed something your eye missed - the trick (as with the gear forum I expect) is knowing what to ignore I find - generally it's pretty obvious.

Oh yeah, I wasn't supposed to be able to shoot the stage, but the nice screen they had in place made it possible (show going on at the moment and can't photograph anything to do with it).

looking good cliff, did you shoot any detail work?

Only a few shots, nothing that really worked for me to be honest. Did get some nice hallway type shots. The place is overwhelmingly 'yellow' with the lighting they have there, so strangely enough, all the feature work flattens out and doesn't shoot too well. But I did get a few nice shots of the entrance etc.

stink... were the stars still there? that was the coolest thing about the whole place

Nope. I remembered you saying something about it when I mentioned I was going there. Unfortunately the ceiling is now pretty bland.

With more time (as I always say) I could have done some artsy stuff, but the mag dutuies have to come first, so it's a case of getting a bunch of 'standard shots' first, and then see what time is left to do anything artsy/detail.

Cliff

klippe

Actually, further to my above post....

The more of these time pressured shots I do, the better I become at getting the required shots in the alotted time. More experience will no doubt mean that I become far more efficient in getting the 'right' shots for the mag, with time left over to play a bit.

I didn't do too bad, but I did find it surprisingly difficult to get nice details shots due to the colours at play.

Hey, my model got offered a modeling job for a new pair of jeans that are coming out in the market. Now I have been given the job to take photographs of her in a pair of jeans without make-up.

I hate harsh sunlight, I also dont like a scene in which is too dark. Im thinking concrete wall, modern public furniture. e.g. benches etc. Perhaps even a playground. Now I am wondering what can I do in terms of a model wearing jeans.

Hmmm. Tips from the glamor boys , please

EDIT: and the lady's.

Congrats.
I love jeans too

Im thinking strong stance, hands on the hips with a twist in the hips. I want to shift away from the cute to a modern approach. Want the pictures to come across as real Auckland. hmm I think ive got a vision.
Sounds excellent.
Just look for examples and try to copy.
Please please please don't forget to photograph her from behind, after all isn't this the nicest view in jeans.

hehe - yeah in a railway station it could look like she was waiting for someone - on a bench or on the concrete platform leaning up against... :)

Maybe see if you can get hold of an old suitcase.
Use empty space like

Not right, stars are still there, infact, during the restoration, they improved them somewhat (they twinkle, the lights that is!) and there is still the moving clouds effect that they use to simulate a normal sky. Its actually very cool, last show I went to there, last year sometime, I forgot about them & it wasn't until about 30 minutes in that I looked up and saw them, I pointed it out to the kids & they spent the rest of the night looking up instead of the show.

Its actually very cool, last show I went to there, last year sometime, I forgot about them & it wasn't until about 30 minutes in that I looked up and saw them, I pointed it out to the kids & they spent the rest of the night looking up instead of the show.
The stars are astronomically correct, too.
The Southern Cross and Oriens Belt are both where they are meant to be

I think that was true to say a year ago. Now Im in the position where Im looking at stuff to sell in order to keep the boat afoat.
Having a bit of trouble justifying my gear at the moment

We are not in a happy place at the moment. 2008 is going to try the weka house I hope it is strong enought to survive. The new job may not have been the smartest move for a number of reasons. Cant go back and cant go foward. Stress is high and cracks appearing.

well today i reviewed 7hours of surveillance tapes at high speed, saw a lot of cars drive by and acouple of ppl with prams but no one stopped at my mailbox but the postie

that being said, he did some weird fiddling about with the mail when it came time for my box, tapping it on his tray, looking at 2 envelopes, switching them from hand to hand etc... it almost looked like he was opening the corner of the letter at one point! but then seemed to change his mind and put it in the (locked) box, and when i got it, it had not been opened

looks like i might have to film him again tomorrow... maybe i'll post myself some bogus interesting-looking mail and see what happens

Oh so you mean fibre optics or something? Whatever the case, the ceiling was a bland blue for me.... :( No moving clouds or anything like that running while I was there. Still, the place is not too shabby to look at as it is. I cannot imagine the man hours it must have taken to do the interior stuff, just so stupidly elaborate.

I did get the offer of a return trip at some stage, and I think I might take the guy up on that offer.

Could be fibre optics, not sure but I would be keen to come along if you get a return trip.

A friend of mine was involved in the refurbishment (plumbing strangly enough:rolleyes:)
They had a more or less free hand as far as costs go, everything had to be returned to origional, really expensive big copper, pain in the rear cast iron and some really intricate lead work. I think they were working on charge up, dream job (for plumbing)

Sancho, that shot is pretty damned cool. Great light in the clouds behind too.

Matt, you big soft berk. The money isn't simply about lining your pcokets, by doing jobs free you're devaluing both yourself and other photographer's work. Once people begin to see decent stuff for free, there's no room left to charge for stuff. It's why clueless oiks doing weddings for $300 on their compacts rile the hell out of pro's who charge more and give more. The cr@p devalues the good stuff.

Top end of Ninety Mile Beach, turn off to the left about 5km north of the start of the shingle road to Cape Reinga.

They have started work on sealing the road, lots of civil work right at the cape parking area, still going to take a few years though but the road is a lot better than the last time I was up there, about 12 years ago

not that I am saying it's a bad place to sit of course.
I have a little book I carry (on international flights anyway) that nicely explains how to land a 747 if needed and where to sit so I reduce my chances of dying. It's written by an experienced pilot so cross fingers its right. The book also suggests the back is the best place due to fuel tanks as mentioned above. Apparently why the flight attendents ask you to put up your windows before landing is so when the engines all catch on fire, they can see which would be the safest exit to use. While in SA I was volunteering with a former Delta pilot who confirmed all this. On that happy note, good night all.

blowing up the airport is probably the best thing to happen to it. In fact, blow up Queenstown and save us all.

Ok, in case anyone's interested. We have two lenses for sale.

One canon 17-55mm f2.8 IS, and one sigma f2.8 70-200 to sell before close of business friday.

Anything above $1100 each will take them away. Buyer must have cash and be able to pickup from newmarket on Friday this week.

If nobody wants em, they're being traded in on friday arvo.

You all know the 17-55, this copy is as good as they get, 1 year old and brand new IS mech.

The sigma is the newer model EX DG Macro, focussing down to just under a meter at all zoom ranges.

Optically both are superb and have been used for wedding photography to produce outstanding results.

For Chris:

First batch:

The one with the woman and the coffee is quite nice. The depth of field seperates the subjects nicely. Could maybe bump the contast a touch? Bit more oomph in the whites. The second shot in the boardroom is effective but lacks true wow qualities. The bird in the white (yum) looks slightly odd with her jaw. and the nearest chair to us intrudes into the image a bit, attracting the attention of the eye a lot. The Macs are good, serves its commercial purpose well I suspect, the reflection on the further away ones maybe a little hot or distracting but I guess there's little you can do about that. The two night ones are great, lots of colour and a bit nice to look at, exactly what they'll want. The gym shots does what it says on the tin I guess.

Second Batch:

The foods shots are ace, though maybe a hint of curves and saturation to bit some punch in the colours. Dude on the bed is cool, like the framing, and as always using uber cool Macs  makes it look pretty doesn't it? Slight hint of a double chin though :? The purple room rocks. End of. The bird on the bed is clothed so you obvioualy failed there. ;) Good shot, slightly 'flat' looking and I could maybe lose the strand of hair from below her eye to her ear, see what it looks like? The one where they are having their breakfast meeting doesn't do much for me personally. Too much of the guy's back and it closes off the picture. Sorry.

The last room shot is cool, shows the room well, once again the tiniest of tweaks on the levels wouldn't hurt but that's nit-picking. Not as cool as the purple room shot mind! :p

That do you? ;)

aww I tried to copy that guys photographs. I dont know if he uses film or not. But after reading some tutorials on how to produce film grain. And using my own idea of how color looks through film I tried it.

I failed to get that look :(
Phillip GrayBill and his mysterious aesthetic look is just too hard to match.

You're starting from the wrong place Matt, look how his stuff is lit, I'd wager a good portion of those studio shots are ring flash... A lot of his other fashion stuff is about the light he's using in the first place, something your shot up there ^^^ lacks in as much strength.

Mediation

ohh so its all about the light he is using. Hmm I wish I had a flash.

Gosh it must take a long time to master light. Is that all it really is?

BTW Dave, would be good if you wrote that comment on my flickr (please). So other people can go "ahh true :)" because others are wondering as well. Not just me.

A normal speedlight wouldn't get you any of those shots mounted on the camera. He's using off camera lighting for a lot of them, what looks like a ringlight or a softbox for a bunch, and the rest is carefully controlled ambient light or room lighting.

His Iceland set is inspiring, the rest although very good, isn't something a thousand other fashion photographers aren't doing. But yeah, the Iceland thing, big thumbs up. :)

manipula

And the PP technique, if you're trying to replicate the look would I think be achieved best through shooting a colourful scene in the first place, tweaking your curves into a slight 'S' shape, replicating film, then desaturate, play about with some dodging and burning and add your grain. Or that's where I'd start.

I suppose what I can gather is that I cannot actually tell light sources yet :( so if I look at a photo I have got no clue how they used the light. Dammit, that is kind of worrying. I suppose I should go out and start trying to see light when I photograph now. I think thats what Tony was trying to tell me all along.

Amazing, never knew I had a disability with seeing light. I suppose ill just keep photographing and try my hardest to shoot for the light. Dave, I guess you can see the light, because you can tell what he is using as previous examples, e.g. guy with nikon speedlight. Who else can see the light?

I suppose you all can by now :)

manipula

I think everyone needs to be able to 'read' light sources and then use that ability to control it how you want, in order to be truly sh!t hot with a camera.

Matt, do you want me to try and explain it to you?

Yes Please. If you cant be bothered than dont worry I can always try and experiment / read until I do get it. I mean I know harsh sunlight and under shade, next to a window light.

But when a flash is thrown into the mix than im confused. But really I am not sure what light can do to a picture. I know a picture looks pretty when the light is right.

Almost needs a caption competition..."Guy in the shop said it was wireless!!"

Don't mean to devalue your photographic skills and bring them down to my level by cheapening them with something as mundane as a newspaper caption competition...however...
