am luvin it discolizard! :) however I have not have much time to play around with it recently. been to friggin buzy w/ work & home stuff, by the time I finally get a chance its too late for me to go out & do something. one thing I can say about it is that it aint easy lugging around in public without getting loads of attention (and also the weight) kinda pisses me off at times when people gather & oogle abit on what I'm shooting. sometimes I feel like just saying "for pete's sake go away & leave me in peace!!!" lolz well i like to be in peace and pretty much left alone when shooting. this is my relaxation and my outlet.

BTW, no offence with my quote Pete :) better than using the F word I thought.

Yup. That is why my next lens will be the 135mmF2L. Its a good length for across the road shots (urban). But of course. When I get better. Im not going to spend money on equipment if my photography has not improved. And when I have not fully understood and gained knowledge from my current lenses. No point buying new glass if I have not improved with my current glass...

Thats my way of going about things.

Couldn't disagree more. Wishy-washy cr@p that falls right inside my definition of sickly sweet postcard fodder. There's no soul or balls to it, it's just designed to look pretty and remove cash from your wallet.

Which is the point I guess. Sickly sweet cr@p sells. But if one of those ended up on my wall I'd take the wall out in protest. (See also Ansel Adams and Colin Prior). <shudder>

And that's why I'll never try and make money from landscapes, I doubt anyone would buy what I shot.

I thought they looked great.

It sells for a reason - it looks good. I'm not sure where that becomes a problem... Obviously, not everyone could do it, or it wouldn't sell.

Photos don't need to stir up controversy or debate, IMO. They just need to make you pause for longer than a glance. If they make you think, then all well and good.

<limp wrist>
If you compare it to fashion;

Some designers come up with all sorts of weird crap to send down a catwalk, most of it rubbish, and get paid a lot of money by people close to the industry ('fine' art photography)

Other designers come up with clothes that are a little bit different, but still look good enough to sell in high-end stores (art photography)

The rest design for K-Mart (me)
</limp wrist>

Just because something is different and 'edgey' doesn't make it good - quite often it's just a bunch of posers stroking each other's egos...

Anyway, think I'm a bit late to the debate.

Hope you're enjoying my hometown, hoping to visit this year :D

LMAO @ limp wrist bit... do you have a special voice to go with that?

i agree with the last statement.

when i'm collecting pics for my 'inspiration' folder - i only choose pics that made me look twice, or stopped me looking away - because thats the stuff i personally want to learn from

if i'm not attracted to a shot, then i just move on - because if i didnt get anything from it when i looked at it, chances are i wont be able to learn how to do it myself either, its just not on my wavelength

Matt - been looking through your websites again. I still really like a lot of your photos, it's just the explanations that I often wish I didn't read.

FWIW, I think from your style, that the prime approach is a good idea - 30mm, and 85mm/135mm maybe. Travel light, lots of urban stuff.

Welcome back. Are you back for good or just a visit? I know how you feel. I got stuck in Sydney a week ago due to thunderstorms and sat on the plane for 3 hours. Then they decided to send us to Auckland and not Wellington. Then we were put up in a hotel and sent home the next morning.

Yeah I'd hate to be put up for a night when you're expected somewhere else.
Even worse when you're back in a place only for a few days and being held up.
One poor girl was told she has to wait from 8am Tuesday till 6pm Wednesday, as that was the next available flight. I managed to get the 12pm flight, only as I requested a seat 26A, and had my bags ID tagged to be sent to Auckland on QF43, otherwise like every other kiwi on the British Airways flight who were late, they put them on the 6pm flight, arriving Auckland at 11pm!

Shot down in flames lol . All good, I like strong opinions, each to his own. I love beauty, I dont care if its postcard stuff or not. It works for me.

I personally wouldnt pay that much because I couldnt afford it and would mount my own work, however if I was wealthy and not a photographer in my own right, I most certainly would.

In saying that I like Tom's work, I also like other styles.

Ok, Im off to do some work now, have a good day all.

Oh and WELCOME BACK WAZZA :)

Thanks Wendy

Had a glance at the work - it's not bad - I didn't find it bad, probably would have worked on keeping the exposure even throughout the panoramics as I see most have dark areas, such as the sea in the coastal shot.

Ah well - looks like we cant make it.. well me anyway.... I have one crazy week of work.. two urgent portrait shoots last night I had to do, and now 6 sets of portraits to edit and finish before Sunday.. in between taking more photos on Saturday and meetings this week.. GAH!!!!!

Haha! At least it's work = exposure and some pocket money
Guess we can meet up early next week with a few others?

--
And mmm I just was woken up, must have been very deep asleep.
Had my sister yelling through my window - wake up Warren!
Thinking she was late for work, and somehow got stuck outside, - got up to realise it's 12pm and her day off

So anyone want to see Piha tonight?
I'll likely go there for a couple hours tonight. Say 7-8:45pm

Cool - everyone has their opinions - and that I do respect.

With Ansel, though, I think of the time when he took his pictures - when it was one hell of a trek with equipment we would, today, consider sub-standard.

I admire his tenacity, too - he sat for 3 days waiting for the 'right light' for one picture.

And he post-processed the hell out of his shots - he was a darkroom tinkerer - if he were alive today, he would be using a LOT of Photoshop or Lightroom, I think.

But, again, he was a man of his time.

Often the story behind the photo is more powerful than the photo. Or it puts the photo into a new light when you know the story.

Any time you take a picture it's photography. My slating of the bloke's work is purely my own opinion, I know others won't agree. I'd personally feel polluted putting any of his stuff on my wall. Feel like I'd have to bounce round the room like a kid smacked to the tits on E-numbers just to fit in with the jolly-jolly sickly sweet outlook on the world. <shudder>

dave doesnt respect ansel adams?

Respect maybe, like his work, not in the slightest. You got to give the man credit for what he did, determination etc, as it's just cool basically. But I think his work is some of the most overated 'art' anywhere. I always try to keep a lid on this particular preference of mine as talking about it front of a bunch of other photographers is recipe for an argument but whatever, I haven't seen a single photo of his that I like. I can't stand the world seen as idealistically beautiful, it's why I hat skin smoothing in model shots, prefer to see cars looking filthy and driven, prefer to see Rannoch Moor in the Highlands burnt out rather than straight off a postcard etc...

not in the morning

What can I say, he abused me as a child... ;)

Just because something is different and 'edgey' doesn't make it good - quite often it's just a bunch of posers stroking each other's egos...

Correct. Edgy for the sake of being edgy is about as attention grabbing as an emo kid dragging their heels down the main street wearing a t-shirt that says 'hate me' on the front. Shooting photos to seek the aproval of others is the wrong motive, shooting them because it's how you want to shoot it bringing along your own personal ethos is. Or dare I say it, painful as it is, if it's paying the bills, shooting what pays... :(

Often the story behind the photo is more powerful than the photo. Or it puts the photo into a new light when you know the story.

Now then you're getting into the argument as to whether art should be annotated or just left for the viewer to make their own mind up. Never really been sure about that one... ;)

I am very interested in seeing how you all gauge your work, as far as I can tell the only real way of seeing where your work sits in relation to some of the best photographers in NZ is to enter competitions.
A lot of these are open to all comers ie (easter show) and have great prize money ($1000 for a 1st place). The bigger shows are judged by a panel of up to 5 qualified people.
Being a member of a Photographic Club or the PSNZ will allow your work to enter more shows.
I don't think an on line forum is going to achieve to this level.

PS if you want to see where u are in relation to world class photographers there are competition for that also.

I think most of us are of the opinion that competitions are fatally flawed. Using them to line yourself up against others is one thing but the judgements are never definitive, rather they're completely subjective. I've yet to see a competition that has ever been even close to agreed that it was definitive and everyone agreed on the outcome.

If your work is pure genius but the dude on the hudging panel doesn't like it you're screwed. :?

i dont really like comparing my work with others' - it either makes you smug if you think its better, or it makes you depressed if you think its worse LOL

the closest i will come to that is to compare my STYLE to another photographer - and then try to learn from them

i shoot to please myself - my own tastes change as i become capable of better/different things - yet i can still look back on some old work and go wow* to myself, and feel lucky that i caught it. and when i shoot for someone else, i am STILL shooting to please myself - how can i hand over anything to a client that i dont believe in myself?

*and i can look back and go yuk too - don't get me wrong LOL

Every photo competition I've seen there's been flaws with. C4 ran a national millenium one, and they've just run that 'Picture This' competition in the UK, both of which were widely panned for having a jury so intent on 'Turner Prize-esque' high art mentality that their choices were seen by a high percentage of those interetd or entered as skewed.

And every camera club I've ever seen has had some head honcho who everyone either fears like he's a thirs world dictator or brown nose so much, that any judging panel has had a distinct tint in his or her favour...

I've seen the World Press Phot exhibition a few times now which is essentially just a competition but noone goes there to see if they measure up, they go to see people good at their craft show the world's stories in pictures.

I think competitions have their place but I really don't think you can use them as a defining rule...

Anyway, I wish I had room for my camera this trip. Cable Bay, Taipa Bay and Coopers Beach were stunningly clear and calm when I went through. Very picturesque. It's settled my toss up whether to take a road trip North and shoot away.

PS - found y'all ;)

Heh - I don't actually know what Potisdad's car looks like, so I guess I can randomly go up to each of the other 12 rooms and say g'day to all of them.
This Lodge is generally a 'rep haven'. It's always the first place any smart travelling rep tries to book (if their companies decide they want to fork out the price).

http://www.lodgebordeaux.co.nz/

It's my own little slice of Tuscany ;)

I'll be sure and take my camera next time, Wendy. This was a no go because it was the first visit North this year, and with a new set of products. Ordinarily, that wouldn't surmount to much, but when the main product is bricks, it very easily rids any spare space you may have in your vehicle.

Oh well, Ive walked the dog, got to do dinner and then some work. I have been lucky enough to get involved with a mate who designs websites for a big company and he is referring the clients to moi for images. I think this may end up quite lucrative :D. Got my first order today with more on the way.

Do you need to buy a TV license in order to watch TV in NZ? Or does the advertising pay for it all?

not any more thanks to the Labour Govt...

there used to be a fee even for a radio (wireless) but then when private tvs became more common around the 1970s they combined them into one fee and called it the broadcasting licence fee, much later renamed into the NZ on Air fee (which was about the time that the whole population lost respect for it) - prolly cos most of the telly programmes made with those funds were sh*te and no one wanted to help fund more!

if you refused to pay it, you got a visit from a NZ on Air surveyer - who would stand at the door and ask you (within clear hearing distance of it) whether you had a TV, and ppl would stand there and baldly lie right to their face even if it was going, and say no, don't have one then shut the door.

then the bill would come - and if you didn't pay it you got listed with Baycorp... which still didnt matter because if you were refused credit because of it, and could prove it was just your NZ on Air fee, then the creditor promptly ignored it.

then Labour announced it was going to be abolished sometime in the late 1990s... and that was that.

The husband and son of a woman in work have all the relevant machinery in their shed. She said they love doing little projects and would be more than happy to have a go if I gave them drawings. I also have another photography related project but more of that later. For now I must master Sketchup.

I used to have a mate of mine who had a sheet metal/light engineering shop in Onehunga, retired and sold out early last year. Had everything/anything you could want and was happy to let you use it.

Unfortunately, six weeks after retireing, was diagnosed with cancer & 4 weeks after that, he passed away.

Don't retire...I don't think people can afford to these days can they? Would be interested in your sketches. See what you come up with compared to my idea. The job...well at first I thought it sucked and I was ready to come back to NZ. When you have been in a job for 10 years and know it inside out, can do it in your sleep (which I often did, Akiwi knows the late night postings) and are head of your department, all is good. Then you decide to move and have to start all over again. That was hard. However, the money I get now being at the bottom in Aus is more than I got at the top in NZ, so all is good again. Plus I've just done my first weekends of on-call, so that's my initiation done and I've been officially welcomed into the job.

I was lucky to get a smile out of her.. ;)

Tickle the beejeezus out of her. That should make her smile.

I really need to learn how to use my flash off camera, I only have the 420ex. No clue. :o I had a look at Strobist but havent had the time do look into it properly, I kind of need someone to demonstrate it, thats best I think.

I am very much at the learning stage too, but the few times I have played with it its awesome fun :)

I just play and teach myself, but thats the best way for me, very much a kinesthetic learner ..

Can do you a good price on a remote trigger too :) About the same price as the guy on trademe, but mine are the better version, the others are prone to misfireing. Let me know if you need any advice on that side of things.

Hey I just bought a Canon 380ex lastnight off tardme, it was a split second auction as it was closing in 1 minute, it was at $164, I added $1 and won it LOL. Just wondering if that was a good price? Just wanted a smaller second flash to compliment mt 550ex and didnt want to spend too much. The price seemed ok, but I have no idea to be honest and can't find too much info on them. LOL oh well I'm sure it'll be just fine for my purposes.
I've had one for donkey's years - It doesn't do a bad job for the price. sing out if you need/can't find a manual. Must say it hasn't been used at all since I got the 580ex.

when i was little my mum used to assemble Sportronic TV games at home for a friend who had a business... who here remembers Pong? that was the main one she used to build. i would play with all the components off the boards and make shapes with her solder LOL so its a very familiar smell

i've had that myself and it's no picnic, i can tell you

WOw, it's 3pm, time to wake up.

I hate that I cant see images at work, not that Im supposed to be on here actually, but anyway.

Wazza, how long are you here for, I cant remember? Are we planning a meet?

Im good at leaving my stuff at home, blame it on the jet lag ;)

No set meets, but I'm free every weeknight, incl tonight, but bad weather.

So maybe Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday next week I'l be at various beaches.

cool! Things definately look diff on birds eye view. I live out henderson as well & I don't recognise it. lolz

Really? Howdy neighbour.

Landmarks/navigation/sense of direction are my good points. :p

From the bottom middle of the aerial shot, is Railside Avenue. (with Bruce McLaren Road splitting off to the left at bottom)
West City in the middle of photo.

The bright terracotta roof further up is the Waitakere Gardens, on Sel Peacock Avenue.

Also got a shot from the Sturges Road estate, where other family live.

Thanks Peter!

Warren, welcome home... even if it is for a short while!

Cheers John

Not sure on the details, it comes in a very asian box from China LOL ... I import a few bits and pieces. Its pretty much two wee devices, one sits on your camera hotshoe (the sender) and the other sits on your flash hotshoe (the receiver) and works in manual flash mode and allows you to fire your flash from wherever. I havn't tried huge distances yet but can do soem testing if needed. You can get multiple receivers so you can fire 2/3 flashes at a time, although because of the chinese new year I havn't been able to order my other recievers yet.

Hope that helped to clarify things. I should be able to people in this thread one for around $90, but if anyone non related to here wants one it would be a different price. A guy on tardme has the other type that are prone to the odd misfire for $80, I could probably do them for $65ish but wouldn't reccomend them. My one (the slightly dearer one has fired probably 200 times, maybe more and never skipped a beat.

The build quality is a little tinnie, but beats the huge prices for any of the alternatives. Its not crap, just you wouldn't want to stand on it :)

Thanks,
Went and saw some old workmates at Westpac yesterday - asked about a previous staff member who I took some pics of her premature baby from late 2006
http://www.warrenwilliams.co.nz/gallery/album/people/lily/index.html

She's keen for a photo shoot with her daughter.

Also got the wedding on Saturday to shoot in a park in Napier (hope the weather holds)

Plus my good friend Lisa wants a catch up at Bethells, and hopefully get some pics with her fiancee, (and I'll shoot their wedding in a couple of years too)

sounds like something i might definitely be interested in... then all i will need is a light stand
actually... 3 lightstands, so i can support my backdrop with something other than handy household fittings...

whats the timeframe for ordering, and does this offer expire?

Yeah I won an auction for some old camera gear yesterday and there is an old tripod in there which I am hoping is ok as I do a similar thing to you at the mo and use whatever I can find.

The above offer won't expire too quickly, and just let me know whenever as I order on a fairly regular basis and would simply add it to my current order.

Turnaround would be anywhere from 4 days to 2 weeks, depending on when I last ordered and how busy I have been :)

You would of course need to add a few $ for shipping from Chch to wherever it is in the great Nation that you reside.

No, I'd have to order like 100 of them before they would consider knocking the price down at all, this is already a pretty good price as I am not adding any shipping as they will simply be added to one of my existing orders.

Keeps it tidier for me as far as keeping track of orders goes though, but no biggie, simply PM me and I'll add it to my order and let you know when it arrives.

My bad

Have a grand night, folks.
Off to GPK for a friends birthday dinner. Most inconvenient that he was born on Valentines, everywhere is booked solid.
Just me and two dudes, so I'll pretend they are my valentines dates ;)

Sleep seems far more appealing at present, though
