I really need to learn how to use my flash off camera, I only have the 420ex. No clue. :o I had a look at Strobist but havent had the time do look into it properly, I kind of need someone to demonstrate it, thats best I think.
Hi Wendy, Unfortunately I think the 420EX doesn't have a Manual setting, so it can't be used off camera with radio triggers.

Thanks,
Went and saw some old workmates at Westpac yesterday - asked about a previous staff member who I took some pics of her premature baby from late 2006
http://www.warrenwilliams.co.nz/gallery/album/people/lily/index.html

She's keen for a photo shoot with her daughter.

Also got the wedding on Saturday to shoot in a park in Napier (hope the weather holds)

Plus my good friend Lisa wants a catch up at Bethells, and hopefully get some pics with her fiancee, (and I'll shoot their wedding in a couple of years too)

She's camera shy, hence the hand over face :p

So busy few days, but will be good.
Love that photo. As already said, a shame about her hand in front of her face.

Hey folks, I'm back
Completely shattered. 1300km later (doesn't sound like much, but in the far north, that crap loads of traveling)

Happy Valentines to y'all :)

Looks like my ihug email is out. That means even my domain mail isn't getting through :p

 I appear to have killed the thread!
My bad

Have a grand night, folks.
Off to GPK for a friends birthday dinner. Most inconvenient that he was born on Valentines, everywhere is booked solid.
Just me and two dudes, so I'll pretend they are my valentines dates ;)

Sleep seems far more appealing at present, though
YHope the power nap was good.

You poor darling, having to go out with 2 guys.

*applies best sancho accent*
the 580 in slave mode apparently will only take ETTL line-of-sight comms from a 550ex, an 580ex or a ST-E2.
If you have a receiver bit that will do the switching via the shoe contacts, then that's another story.

p.s. we're waiting on pics of the soldering!

No you still need a trigger, the slave features only work with another 550ex/580ex/exII I believe. And the master Flash would still need to be fired somehow either from a remote trigger or mounted on the camera hotshoe.

Does that make sense? :)

Can you 'ping' a serial port to see if anything is attached? We have a piece of equipment supposedly hooked up to comm port 1 but the software doesn't see it. I wondered if there was anyway to see actually what port it was connected to.

"tech support, you've reached us on a friday afternoon - any advice may be cr@p"

Ping is an I/P command only (I.E. network)- you can't use it for a Com port. If, however you can put up with the rubbish MS supply for a terminal package, try running up Hyperterminal & set to com port in question & see if you can see anything when hitting "enter"
If Hyperterm not installed (start\programs\accessories\communications\hyperte rminal ) you may need to install it as a windows component.)

Of course. But everything is administratorly locked out. (Hell, they even got rid of solitaire.) Software looks for something at the end of Comm1 but doesn't do anything which makes me think the equipment isn't attached to Comm1.

So. Tell me. What the **** is it that makes the average Kiwi driver so completely, utterly f***ing useless? Three days in the last five I've only avoided an accident because I've been VERY on the ball. And on top of this there's numerous displays of very dodgy driving I didn't get involved in, and I've only been driving into Welly from the outskirts, like 10-15min journeys either way.

I'm both shocked and one step away from ripping the head off the next dude who tries to pull across and take the front end of our car off. I've always been vocal with idiots in the UK, but I've never felt the need to get out the car and get a bit more serious. I'm beginning to wonder (seriously) if that'll remain the case...

On another note will it be sunny in Auckland in April? Or is that winter time?

Noted. The thing is it isn't as though I'm not used to having to be on the ball. As anyone who's driven in the UK, particularly a city will know, it's not exactly forgiving. Glasgow has a stretch of road over about 6 miles where several motorways merge and there's a junction joins the road every few hundred metres, from both sides of the carriageway and it gets up to six lanes for one section, all at 70mph, whether the speed limit says to do that or not.

Here it just seems there's zero resemblance of common sense or spatial awareness. As soon as half of them are required to make a decision they panic, like sheep, and almost always do the more dangerous of the options available. I genuinely wonder how many Kiwis have major bangs or close calls driving in Europe... It's all good being chilled out and taking life at a steady pace but when you're in a car you're driving a tonne-plus weapon and it's not just your own problem when you cock up.

Anyway <relax> :p

Tell me about it. And yup for some weird reason now I have a large car I'm a lot more relaxed (except when some muppet cuts me off or goes flying past at 600mph). Mind you I guess having aircon helps. I'm also much more aware that it's a LOT heavier than the little 4 bangers I used to have and take it easy for that reason as well.

In other news where the hell is everyone? It's dead here.

Only about a million times. Apparently it used to work before I started. Then they decided to move the PC and it hasn't worked since. The other piece of equipment connected to the USB port chugs along like a little trooper.
bingo! I'm voting you've plugged whatever device into another com port. Either that or at the other end of that cable it isn't plugged into what it used to be plugged into.

Dave, if drivers in N.Z. show any competance, the govt. quickly whisks them away to a secret location and fits them with silver-lined hats with massive doses of radiation to cure this said competance, there is evidence of such "treated" drivers everywhere so trust us, it's true. Best you get with the program and drive in a similar manner before we suddenly notice you're missing for a spell. Either that or use competance in measured doses away from anyone that will report you to the authorities.

hehe. After living in Europe for a while now, I have noticed that the NZ driving is pretty bad.

Funny that different countries have different tendancies.

In England they drive like maniacs! but are incredibly curteous, i.e. always let you in .
Switzerland they drive slow & never seem to exceed the speed limit.
Germany they drive well but fast & are very aggressive i.e. never let you in when trying to change lanes.
Italy.... that's a completely other story... they are MAD! overtake on blind corners... however seem to stil drive well and are curteous.

Probably a very valid point. I notice that particularly on motorways that in NZ cars overtake left & right. Slow drivers stay on the right etc. Here you can loose your license for overtaking on the wrong side.

on overtaking on the inside - had a muppet try to do that on the INSIDE lane of the passing lane BEHIND the slower vehicle in front of him. Dangerous AND stupid. Then when he couldn't get past that way, he flicked into the other lane after the passing lane and buried it. What a ^%#^!#!! moron.

Cool about the '86 ... I want to upgrade to a bent8 at some point, always wanted one - super smooth, loads of low down grunt, fantastic on the open road. Quite happy with the 6 right now though aside from the rather wallowy suspension that needs looking at.

Here in Auckland, and NZ for that matter - people expect you to know the road code by heart, and hence drive aggresively. If you are in the wrong then tough luck. There too are those people (Kiwis, Asians, and what have you) who don't give a rats ass about others on the road.

It is a "me" mentality that drives it. Some people are so centred on themselves that they couldn't care about how their driving affects others.

Dave "art" is always a personal thing. Very seldom do I go WOW at other landscape photographers. There is 1 ausy guy that does coffee books and I did go WOW (forgot his name).

John like them enough to pay $2000?

I think, that if you want to sell landscapes, they have to be printed big before they will sell in any volume. People just can't visualize what a 10" wide pic on a screen will look like 2m wide, and it's at that size that almost any photo can have wow factor.

For AE86's. Or early 80's RWD Toyota Corolla's to the non nerd-speak educated. It's a bit of a closed door though, gentleman's handshakes etc from what I can see, I got recommended.

One will be mine before the year is out. :p

Waste of time and money old rustbuckets. Much better off with an ITR or s15. Try toyspeed.org.nz if you want kiwi toyota owners.

Cheers for the link. :) None plussed by turbos, an ITR is on the list as well, just not sure if before or after the old rustbucket. Ideally would love to have both. :? Hey ho, not for a while anyway.

Nice one Raikyn. On the subject of aircraft (with props) what's a good shutter speed to get movement in them - or is it dependent on rotation speed?

Cheers, Shane.

on overtaking on the inside - had a muppet try to do that on the INSIDE lane of the passing lane BEHIND the slower vehicle in front of him. Dangerous AND stupid. Then when he couldn't get past that way, he flicked into the other lane after the passing lane and buried it. What a ^%#^!#!! moron.

You guys should try South Africa. ..A lot of the drivers there are crazy not helped by the state of the roads or the policing. Limit is 120km/h roughly translating to 140 km/h. Its perfectly acceptable to carry people in the back of your ute (at this speed). And there isn't such a thing as 'the 2 second rule' about following distances. I was only on navigation so I lived.

Not totally sure, but slower the better IIRC. Probably have to get down to 1/400 or slower to get a good blur in the prop.

depends on wether they're landing or taking off - landing they usually just idling along so quite slow really - anything around 1/125 or so should be okay but you have to watch your panning if using a tele. Taking off is another story 1/250 should be fine.

e.g.
taking off (shot at 1/250)

landing (same 1/250- not nearly enough blur...)

Why men don’t write advice columns

Dear Walter:
I hope you can help me here. The other day I set off for work leaving my husband in the house watching the TV as usual. I hadn’t gone more than a mile down the road when my engine conked out and the car shuddered to a halt. I walked back home to get my husband’s help. When I got home I couldn’t believe my eyes. He was in the bedroom with a neighbor lady making mad passionate love to her. I am 32, my husband is 34 and we have been married for twelve years. When I confronted him, he broke down and admitted that he’d been having an affair for the past six months. I told him to stop or I would leave him. He was let go from his job six months ago and he says he has been feeling increasingly depressed and worthless. I love him very much, but ever since I gave him the ultimatum he has become increasingly distant. I don’t feel I can get through to him anymore.
Can you please help?
Sincerely,
Mrs.Sheila u

Dear Sheila:
A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults with the engine. Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the jubilee clips holding the vacuum pipes onto the inlet manifold. If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be that the fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the carburetor float chamber.
I hope this helps.
