R.I.P my old friend you will be missed.

Sometimes the hardest thing to do is the kindest.
I take it you where the one that had to do it? That would be very very hard.
Sorry to hear it. Bet the girls are gutted!

Why men don’t write advice columns

Dear Walter:
I hope you can help me here. The other day I set off for work leaving my husband in the house watching the TV as usual. I hadn’t gone more than a mile down the road when my engine conked out and the car shuddered to a halt. I walked back home to get my husband’s help. When I got home I couldn’t believe my eyes. He was in the bedroom with a neighbor lady making mad passionate love to her. I am 32, my husband is 34 and we have been married for twelve years. When I confronted him, he broke down and admitted that he’d been having an affair for the past six months. I told him to stop or I would leave him. He was let go from his job six months ago and he says he has been feeling increasingly depressed and worthless. I love him very much, but ever since I gave him the ultimatum he has become increasingly distant. I don’t feel I can get through to him anymore.
Can you please help?
Sincerely,
Mrs.Sheila u

Dear Sheila:
A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults with the engine. Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the jubilee clips holding the vacuum pipes onto the inlet manifold. If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be that the fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the carburetor float chamber.
I hope this helps.
Lol.. I knew that was coming.:D

Not totally sure, but slower the better IIRC. Probably have to get down to 1/400 or slower to get a good blur in the prop.

That's what I thought, cheers :)

depends on wether they're landing or taking off - landing they usually just idling along so quite slow really - anything around 1/125 or so should be okay but you have to watch your panning if using a tele. Taking off is another story 1/250 should be fine.

e.g.
taking off (shot at 1/250)
http://joebloggs.servebeer.com/potn/img_2997-800.jpg

landing (same 1/250- not nearly enough blur...)
http://joebloggs.servebeer.com/potn/img_3098-1200.jpg

Thank you, that's what I was after. I won't be the one shooting, a rank amatuer will be so I'll recommend he goes a bit wider and can crop in rather than losing most of the shots through mis timing.

Cheers, Shane.

Throw it away and a buy a new one :)
You might have a hard time finding ram that is compatible, and if you do, don't be surprised if its very expensive.
Keep using until you can spend 1500-2000 on a new machine if you self build, and 1800-2500 if you get someone else to make it.

Well, that's probably what I wanted to be told. ;)

You might have a hard time finding ram that is compatible, and if you do, don't be surprised if its very expensive.

Really? Bugger. According to the Dell site, the compatible module is:

[SIZE=2]DDR SDRAM
SO DIMM 200-pin
333 MHz ( PC2700 )
128 x 64
1 x memory - SO DIMM 200-pin

So I figured the stuff on pricespy listed as "[FONT=Verdana]1GB DDR SDRAM 200pin SODIMM Notebook" would do the trick.

Still the rav never let me down and swam to the other side.. a car coming the other way was looking at going for it having seen me splash through... Needless to say i advised that it would be a bad idea.. Still they went to get their toes wet.. drove 5 yards and got stuck...

lol .... I hope they got it out..

Haha, thats funny, man that river goes up and down fast! crazy,

Video editing packagae would do it piece of cake. I use Adobe Premiere, but stuff such as Pinnacle should also do it.

I'm sorry about your loss Tony. She was lovely.

I just got in from Napier myself.
Nice shots Raikyn. I saw them overhead whilst shooting the wedding in the blistering sun. Checked the weather later, and they said it was 26*C.

I was up in the botanical gardens on the hill, and then afterwards went along to the Southern end of the beach away from the massive crowds. And then spent 30min driving 2km to Queen Victoria in the port, and got a couple of shots there - massively backlit.

It was a VERY difficult wedding to shoot.
Harsh harsh lighting.
My flash won't shoot auto, so I had to keep changing the manual settings, and was shooting from 1/2 to 1/64th settings. (chimp chimp chimp)

Just downloading the pics now to my laptop. Lack of creative shots, lack of big group shots.. As it was SO hot, most left immediately after until meeting up at the reception later, where everyone got drunk and stoned.

Attractive indeed. Maybe try not shooting completely wide open. Say 2.8 to 4 and you'll still get great bokeh, and more DOF and better keeper rate.

When you likely to do the next shoot? If I was around, I'd lend you my 50 1.4.

I think it just needs a bit more contrast to it... her face needs to be lit a bit more - were you using flash? In this particular image that blown out bit to the right is a bit distracting but you cant do much about that...

You dont need to overdo it to make it still look natural - it just needs to pop a bit mroe - it looks a little flat :S

cool thanks lil_miss! ill keep those points in mind. Nah didn't use flash. Ah ha ill remember that " little pop" word. And flat. Alright so im thinking a bit of S curves will help that.

Yup. Outside trying to shoot stuff without flash is either the process before producing average shots, or a LOT of messing about with the camera and angles. Generally I'd say jumping in for that would be running before walking...

Unless someone is wanting to add to existing controllers, I would strongly suggest looking at
http://www.radiopopper.com/blog/index.php

They will be released in a few weeks, but there may be some delay in getting them in the part of the world.

The RadioPopper avoids the line-of-site problems with Canon's infra-red system, and bright light signal degradation, while preserving the full E-TTL which does such a great job (usually).

Hehe and so it begins. :p Every young bloke I've ever seen (and quite a lot of older ones) who has photographed a pretty girl has felt that euphoria. Including me. The next stage you'll go through is wanting to do it more often, and whether the sole goal, or a part of the reasons you want to, and whether you realise or admit to it or not, it WILL have something to do with the fact that pretty ladies satisfy the sexual urges of blokes.

EVERY bloke I've ever seen enter this stage (including me) has got a 'kick' out of it, whether they admit it or not.

The trick now Matt is to keep going whilst maintaining a level of professionalism til you get to the point where that novelty wears off and it becomes a way of expressing your photographic goals like your urban work. And stay well away from the old seedy bloke sat whacking off in his room mentality that afflicts so many guys in this situation. I dare say there's at least 200 of them on this forum.

Unless you were stood there acting all 'tripod' and rooling I doubt it meant she thought you were being a letch. Everyone I know I've ever let along to a shoot has said something similar about me.

Couple of things. I looks soft not due to DOF, because I can't see any area close around here face that is sharp. I know my 300D didn't give the sharpest of images, but the biggest culprit I found with people is when I resize them down to 600x400px or whatever that it looks soft. I always do USM on both the full size image, and then again at any size I crop it to for display.

I doubt the filter would have made much difference to sharpness if it was clean.

In the top shot, you can see the elastic marks across her back from her bra. Now as dodgy as it sounds, if and when it's possible if I know a model is doing anything open backed, or bare chested, bare bum etc, I suggest she ditches the bra and knickers as long before the shot as possible, and wear something lose instead. This enters the area where the model needs to trust you and not think you're up to something, but if she does and you explain why they're usually comfortable. Half of my 'regulars' used to arrive at shoots with pyjama bottoms and a loose shirt on. Hardly glam but it stopped the elastic marks.

Can I also ask, is she a pretty friend or actually a model?

Ah I see :O. How do you move your body when shooting? nice and strong... I know its a dumb question.

Monopod the most useless thing I've ever bought. ;)

Stand legs firm, if you're not at full standing height or crouched down and somewhere in between, spread your feet some to brace your body a bit. Get the right hand on the shutter, left under the lens like you're cradling it. On a longer lens get the hand out near the end of the lens itself but try not to upset the manual focus ring. Then get your arms in by your side, upper arms against your body, tight in, like you're trying to show off your fake cleavage or readying a boxing guard. Don't force it so much that you're all tight and rigid, but be fluid and braced.

DOF wise, I use between 2.8 and 8, with the 2.8 and 4 being used most. Anything down at 1.8 or lower is asking for trouble unless you're in an enclosed environment and/or you can take your time to get the shots, if she's laid down say.

decide what part of the photo you want to emphasise and gently fade anything which detracts from that

You should always use flash even in daylight....

 not so sure about that, really depends what you are doing

Couldn't disagree more. Sorry but... :?

im leaning more your way - but i know why she said that

What does everybody think of this? New edit of a photo from xmas 2006.

i really like the diptych effect, interesting shot
door frame is a little too thick though

Monopod the most useless thing I've ever bought. ;)

i only use mine for bracing long tele shots

I flit around too - especially with weddings - no time for going slow.... if your shutter speed is good enough though it shouldnt matter unless you move really quick.. heh

I agree with Dave - I couldnt find anywhere that it looked like you'd try to focus - the whole thing is soft in general... what shutter speed were those taken with?

Well I activated one focus point and aimed it at one eye, always changed the focus point depending at what angle I was on. On AF-OS mode. My 300D is really slow. So I think I went real trigger happy, often having to wait for the pics to load onto the CF card. Popping off shots. I think may be that made the camera constantly find focus?? meh must be the DOF. Ill try F2.8 next time.

Yup I can confirm that it was my use of Aperture. F3.5 is sharp. Cheers Lil_miss and Dave for pointing that point out right away. I dont understand why my 50mm is soft wide open though.

FECK!!!!

What was the shutter speed.

well, one of them was 1/4000 sec according to the exif, aperture f/2.5
might be technique letting that one down

Yup. Ive worked out that humans need delicate technique. Its not like big concrete blocks or steal structures :)

At least I have learned something:cool:

Wide aperture = accuracy. Taking my time and keeping still.

Yeh thats at the "Barrell Inn" pub

No, it's been closed all day, spoke to a local cop this morning and he said it was a fire and then an explosion and I know they have gas bottles out the back, he also said it may have been deliberate so just have to wait and see. I was staying just 3 houses up on cook street and never even heard the bang at 3am, but woke to people talking at about 4am and flashing lights etc...

Steam train leaving the bay after another successful Art Deco weekend

Lovely train that was - also caught a glimpse of it too - believe it was in Napier also. (the weekend really was a mad rush for me)

Matt, I was going to point out some things, but manipula already made the points I was going to say. Bra marks etc. And overall softness should be dead sharp on the eyes no matter what - even if it's a soft focus look overall, I feel the eyes should still captivate you.

Ended up in Muriwai myself tonight, fired off a few shots, some good. Some terrible (but limiting shooting gannets with a 105mm lens on a 1D :p)

Seems no one is keen to catch up during week/anytime for photos. I'm also throwing a small party at my place on Friday evening - music/drinks/nibbles/photos on the Bravia LCD - my family and friends there, plus anyone from here welcome along too. Just sent an invite to the ones on facebook in Auckland. :)

and......... the wedding yesterday....

Pissed with rain all day - it was hosing it down...it was also very cold.. Thanks to Mark (Sancho) for his invaluable help.... now i better see what images we could manage to get despite the conditions...........

Yes it was a nightmare...

(*note today not a cloud in the sky bright blue sky and very warm)

Sounds like the wedding from hell. Hope you got some good photos though.

Yes. Im not as tough as I thought I was. We got her 6months after we got married so 13.5 yrs. Kids are fine. Mum and Dad not so good
. Let's change the subject. How is the weather there?

Only adjusted the exposure and contrast. No smart sharpen... Just one of my shots. Please dont burn me to the ground.

She is stunning. Apply curves a little to increase the contrast.

Still going through them. Light editing... This one still needs a bit of work. I know its a bit soft on the face (need to smart sharpen it). But damn I love photographing gorgeous women.

This one also needs to be smart sharpened, dodge eyes etc. Just wanted to share. Still light editing stage.

http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/453/resized2iz0.jpg

Is a bit soft, but I quite like it. Looks oldschool
As mentioned b4. Stunning but a little soft.
Dave has already mentioned that the aperture is probably too wide open.
In the studio i normally use about F8. It is meant to be the lenses sweet spot & ensures the face / eyes are focused.

Hehe and so it begins. Every young bloke I've ever seen (and quite a lot of older ones) who has photographed a pretty girl has felt that euphoria.

Part of the process dude, enjoy it.

The shot above itself, I quite like, but it's soft all over? The quality been killed in resizing down you think?

I agree with all he said.
A great accessory is a reflector. I did quite a few shoots with the reflector propped up against a cheap tripod & weighted with a small sand bag. Means you don't need an assistant.

Ah I see :O. How do you move your body when shooting? nice and strong... I know its a dumb question.

I need a monopod
Forget the monopod idea.
how would that help you. For photographing person you need s much manoeuvrability as possible with the camera to focus & frame. A monopod will only get in the way. And it only really helps with long telephoto shots in low light to steady the camera... which you are not doing.

I'll look that up John and see if it isn't easier for us to meet you at the hotel and find Bruce together.
I agree with everything he said.

hehe sorry - probably wont be posting any on here... I've got them in albums on my facebook which I've shared with those who wanted to see them... I wont be putting them on our blog either as thats purely for the work done by Momentz not really us in general :) Most were just snap shots - no time for setting up fancy stuff. There was nothing within the 25gb that was spectacular I'm afraid.. heh

Anyway know what a good price for a nikon sb-28 would be?
