That is probably my only wish at the moment in terms of equipment. Just hope in the future I will be able to afford better build quality. That goes from a new body and a better 50mm F1.4... Thats pretty much it. My dad has always told me that build quality and weight is important in gear because it's about the feeling of it and it helps to steady your shots.

On the flip side, its $800ish sitting there being used very little and the 450D is coming out in the next month or two meaning the 400d will instantly lose a few hundy in resale value.

Does it stay or does it go :| ¿?

Sell it now otherwise you may as well keep as a backup

Sell the 400D and buy a fast prime. e.g. Sigma 30mm F1.4 or upgrade your Canon 50mm F1.8 to a better build and slightly faster F1.4... :)

No, the money would be to pay off 1/2 the 40D as it put on the CC :)

Don't need any more glass for a while, plus I'd be murdered... have the wedding and honeymoon this year, would be good to be able to afford to at least leave the south island LOL

Be very carefull ... once you do a hobby for a living the fun quickly gets sucked out of it.

I used to love animation and computer design. I worked in the industry for 7 years and the love certainly faded. Instead of doing the cool things you like, you end up with all this boring corporate work. Instead of animating something cool, I ended up animating a lozenger going down someones throat for a TV commercial etc... which is one reason I am very wary of using photography to earn an income. I am happy to explore the options, but it would be on my terms and never full time.

Matt, I think your an extremely creative guy. You look like someone who has studied photography for years. I got a B.A. in photography and I don't think my work is nearly as creative as yours. I'm still growing and learning everyday tho'. Did you ever consider working in photography? You could be a nature photographer and work for magazines, or a freelancer, and do contract jobs. You could sell your (expressionism)to art galleries who would promote your work and get you recognition. I would recommend you look into one of these possibilites. Photography may just become your whole life.

I mean I could start off finding a job that involves photography. Would be nice on my CV. And then if I don't like it ill just head off somewhere else. I suppose this whole time in my job finding ive been looking for stuff that will impress my family and friends. Now im beginning to realize that I have to go for things that will improve... myself. JOTD: The Bacon Tree
Two Mexicans are stuck in the desert, wandering aimlessly and close to death.
They are close to just lying down and waiting for the inevitable, when all of a sudden.......

"Hey Pepe, do you smell what I smell?
Ees bacon I ahm sure of eet."
"Si, Luis eet smells like bacon to meee".

So, with renewed strength, they struggle up the next sand dune, and there, in the distance, is a tree loaded with bacon.
There's raw bacon, dripping with moisture ..there's fried bacon, back bacon, double smoked bacon...every imaginable kind of cured pig meat.

"Pepe, Pepe, we ees saved!
Eet EES a bacon tree!"
"Luis, are you sure ees not a meerage?;
We ees in the Desert don't forget."
"Pepe when deed you ever hear of a meerage that smeell like bacon...ees no meerage, ees a bacon tree".

And with that ...Luis races toward the tree. He gets to within 5 meters, with Pepe following closely behind, when all of a sudden a machine gun opens up and Luis is cut down in his tracks.

It is clear he is mortally wounded but, true friend that he is, he manages to warn Pepe with his dying breath.

"Pepe...go back man,you was right....ees not a bacon tree."
"Luis Luis, mi amigo...what ees it?
"Pepe...ees not a bacon tree...

Ees..........

Ees...

Ees.........

Ees....

... Eees a Ham Bush"

Insurance is going to cover my lens and Progear didnt even laugh, such good blokes those! I had a long chat to David who is there from PixelsToGo (where Aaron works ie Fritz), they are incredibly friendly and helpful. Apparently the IDS MkIII is still very difficult to get, 3 came in and Paul nabbed 1 to replace his 5D. Another customer demanded the other and well not sure what happend to the third. I asked them to keep me one when the next shipment comes in :p

Sancho, valid points but I have been doing design and animation for 10 years now and still love it. Most jobs have crap bits, crap days, even weeks, but generally I do like my job now that Ive gotten used to the clientele. One does have to be wary though with creative areas I think, I like that I do photography part time and get a small income from that to suppliment my salary as a web designer. Just my 2c

Thats exactly how I felt when I entered the design/animation industry, I had ALL the passion you are displaying now, and more :)

Don't get me wrong, I loved it at first, and still enjoyed it from time to time, but it certainly lost its spark.

Ask a mechanic if he wants to work on cars in his spare time.

Ask a baker if he wants to bake bread on his day off.

Get my drift? Although If you are working in the photography industry indirectly, like processing/printing or something then your passion for taking shots should last longer.

I know you are still very young etc and I know I never really took on what people were telling me when I was your age so I am going to wish you luck and leave it there. LOL

But you gotta put things into perspective that it is about the person as well and there outlook on life. Everyones different.

What about Karen walker. And fashion designers... There passion for clothing style drives money output. You can say the same with a photography related career. Magnum, photojournalists people that work for national geographic. They are engaged into there careers purely as a passion.

I suppose the way some other people view it as an almost ironic way of looking at it. But yeah you have scared me. hehe.

Thanks brother, ended up getting paid for some design work I did a while back for a client in France, so paid off the 70 - 200 yesterday and maxed out the card again with a 40d, a stofen diffuser for the 550 ex (thats right, no more milk containers) and a Nikon sb-28 flash. All for $1824, so saved a good few hundy. Just need to do lots of work again to pay for it all LOL

Picked up 2 extra batteries for $35 shipped too which I was pretty rapt with. And will grab a remote shutter release from one of my overseas suppliers and I'll be back where I was :)

Going to put the 400D on tardme tonight unless anyone knows anyone looking to enter the dslr market. If so PM me, we'll talk.

If it was for someone on this forum, or a close friend or family I will throw in a free gift of some form :)

A second body is fine in-studio, or draped from the neck on a two-camera strap (clumsy) or if you always have a -very- tame assistant. Otherwise it will be useful only when in a few months you have to send the 40D in for repair.;)

Sell the 400D now, and buy your lady a good, current P&S. She'll love it, and might even let you carry it for her. And there may even be a hundred or two left over.

Staff used to think if I gave them a performance review they'd get an pay increase. However, somewhere else I worked we had a performance review and got a pay increase. Of course it was coincidental that happened. Yeah right! I told them if it wasn't linked to pay, have the review after the increase.

When we were taken over by a private company, they won the tender because they refused to pay an annual increase for 3 years. That sucked. We had to strike to get what should happen automatically. (Wouldn't have had to strike if the management had been on our side...b*****ds, out for themselves. I've got my huge pay increase and bonuses, sod you lot.) Not that I'm bitter or anything.. If you don't have a particular reason to keep it then sell it.
I have kept my 350D but mainly because I do occasional commercial photo shoots, and keep that in my bag as a backup. Also my children are showing an interest in photography, so if we go to the zoo or something they can use the 350D & then I get more time to take photos as they want to take them too.

Would rather me find a glamorous job.
I have the feeling that you should aim more for something with customer contact. You seem to enjoy talking. I take it this job is as a machine operator printing photos?

Hey all, just a quick reference check really. Does everyone here who has upgraded their camera body and kept their old one actually ever use the old one?

yes i do, as a 2nd unit for weddings

Sell the 400D and buy a fast prime. e.g. Sigma 30mm F1.4 or upgrade your Canon 50mm F1.8 to a better build and slightly faster F1.4... :)

a really CHEAP fast prime...?

Our 17-55 went in on 30th January and HASNT EVEN BEEN LOOKED AT!!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRR I rang them and abused them today after getting told last week that things are taking 15-20 working days to even be looked at. Today is WORKING day 17. Apparently now its finally being escalated or so they say. Not to mention I dropped it off at Photo Warehouse on the 24th of Jan and it took a week to get to Canon:evil:
We used the service form with everything exactly as they wanted it, including Visa for the inspection prepayment, and delivered it to Canon in North Shore.

I would never trust the performance, or the inter-company relationships, of a dealer.

I couriered a 17-85mm lens to Canon, with the form on 5 Dec.; inspection charged on 7 Dec., repaired by 14 Dec with new focussing motor.

My daughter's 17-85mm failed at the same time, but she managed to get it serviced while they were closed for Christmas!

Using the right form, prepaying and not having an intermediary that Canon has to work through seems to increase the likelihood of fast processing. You may well be right on the warranty question - they don't improve the revenue-earning performance of the technicians.

I had no choice - having bought it through the shop in order to honour the warranty I had to go back to them... They said things are taking 15-20 working days at the moment and I believe every word of that.. they're still slack.. it should never take that long JUST to get looked at regardless of who sends it in.

I think that shot you linked to is just a bit of decent skin smoothing, possibly some flash, though if it is it's very soft, and a well composed image. Her makeup looks good too.

Two models would be good man, gives you chance to vary things a little. And of course if you can keep them both up for lots of shoots (don't crowd them) then you'll soon develop a great working relationship with them which will tkae your work on leaps and bounds.

This is what he said after I asked.

It's always hard for me to remember exactly what I did, but I can tell you this much.... I use a softbox on my flash with extra diffusion paper, with a 50 mm 1.4 on my Canon 20d. F stop below 5.6 for sure.

weka2000
21st of February 2008 (Thu), 13:13
Matt I shouldnt tell you this but I used a 70-200 F2.8 for 90% of my model shoots both in studio and outdoors. Outdoors never used a flash or reflector.

A lot depends on time of day and weather conditions. Personally I liked to keep some distance between me and the model "personal space" if you like.

As for 2 models, it can only make things better, saves time and make each other feel "safe" they can also push each other.

A note re your last shoot .... watch the cleverage. Always be lower or higher than the models eyes but make sure the eyes are sharp.

I also mostly use the 70-200. Though outdoors I like using a reflector or a flash.

Keep gear dry and out of the sand and sea Wendy

well here's one of my moonrise photos - after running the length of the house to grab the bigma i only had time for 2 photos before it cleared the hills, but still happy with some of my others too

handheld 1/200 sec, ISO 3200, f/5.6, 40D + bigma @ 313mm
colour/saturation not enhanced, noise reduced in sky area

Of the two, I really liked this one. Very Kimbolton-ish and so typical of that area.

This is what he said after I asked.

It's always hard for me to remember exactly what I did, but I can tell you this much.... I use a softbox on my flash with extra diffusion paper, with a 50 mm 1.4 on my Canon 20d. F stop below 5.6 for sure.

I thought if he'd used flash he'd killed it down a lot, a diffuser and extra paper would be it. Daft question Matt, have you figured out how to look at a photo and read it to figure out where light, what sort of light and take educated guesses at settings were yet?

A note re your last shoot .... watch the cleverage. Always be lower or higher than the models eyes but make sure the eyes are sharp.

Was that cleavage Tony? ;)

Just a note regarding your position in relation to the model, certainly in terms of here eye movement when doing so. If you're looking down at the subject, you're giving the viewer the mental impression of domination. The photographer and the viewer are the more powerful, the subject the inferior. Not a problem, but when some guy is photographing half naked ladies and they're towering over her you get into the areas where your shots are associating meanings. From a femenists stand point you begin to raise questions about whether you're shooting that girl and imposing the male as being the more sexually dominant. It's not stuff you may actually care about, but it's stuff you should be aware of. I got thrown a book on femenism during shooting my first exhibition and told to rethink whether half the shots I had taken were giving an impression I was happy with. Most of them stayed but only because of an educated view. The fact remains however I'm rubbish with feminist theory, same as I am with politics and can never remember any of it, but it's better to know than not.

Vice versa if you shoot from below, and she's looking down at you, particularly if she's got some PVC gear on like one or two of Pete's models then you associate her with the power etc. It's why you see a lot of big huge rugby stars have their portrait taken from lower down, emphasise their power, strength and domination.

Don't over burden yourself with it, but be aware. Shooting down Clara Bell's cleavage whilst she's all curled up below you giving puppy-dog eyes isn't coy and cute, it's very definitely making you look like you shot it for your own 'personal' needs. :p

Oh and I use both the 24-70 and 70-200 equally for model stuffed.

If the weather is ok I plan to go, Ive done the last 3 years. Its fun. At least I have another lens I can use

You make it sound like that 'other lens' is rubbish! :p

Get some decent cleaning fluid over the filter to clean it up. (You were using a filter right?) Otherwise leave it, both of my bodies have had gallons of sea spray over them and love it, like a little bath for them! ;)

Isn't it any single digit camera? If only your 5D could talk.

Light spray isn't a problem I don't think. I took my 10D under a waterfall at Milford, no problem. Others with p&s cameras were huddled inside quickly wiping any spots of moisture off. A bloke I know took his 10D to antarctica and didn't have a rain cover and he had it resting on his kayak!!! Just clean the salty moisture off with a clean water moistened rag.

TBH I don't really see the need to have the camera out in the rain unless you're shooting sport or something where the shot IS rain. If it's landscapes you're not gonna get the shot til it subsides anyway, sit there, keep it in the bag (my big one has the AW cover) and wait, whip it out as the clouds break and get the shot...

It's cold or snow I'd be more worried about I think.

<friday afternoon half-asleep rant>

Have to take issue with this (cause it falls into my politically correct basket) -

Looking down on a subject is a suggestion of dominance in some circumstances. I think it's very much overstating the case to say that every photo looking down on a subject shows that the photographer intentionally or unintentionally is asserting dominance.

Having the subject look slightly upwards elevates the chin (good for removing wobbly bits), elongates the neck, and gets the eyes a bit wider.

If you're below a subject, they can often wind up with a double chin... which most prefer to avoid...

I'm just saying that it's easy to get carried away with feminism, but sometimes, a photo is just a photo :D

I think you can use a high position to convey dominance, but I don't think a high position in and of itself implies dominance.

</friday afternoon half-asleep rant>

p.s. I thought the Lions press photos when they toured were pretty funny. Crossed arms, no smiles, chin half-lowered to the chest, slight scowl - intimidation factor.... 0 :D

'scuse the ignorance, but I figured you're most likely to know - how susceptible are old film cameras to water damage? more or less than digital?
