View Full Version : Perth, Western Australia Meets for 2008

I went to Penguin Is. yesterday and would like to offer that location as a proposed site for the next meet. There you will find nature in the wild, not in cage.
Right now there are Crested, Bridle and Fairy Terns nesting as well as Pelicans. The penguins are still on the Is too. Rails (below) are very friendly and there are a number of skink species on the island.
Oh, did I mention the snorkeling is brilliant?
It's 30min from Perth CBD and a $10 (morning pass) boat trip over which leaves every our from 9:00am. You can also pay a bit more and take a glass bottom boat ride or tour around Seal Is.
I'm off the Victoria on the 24th, Dryandra on the upcoming Labour Day weekend (1, 2, 3rd March) so both dates are out. Sundays are best for me though the first or second Saturdays of the month are also good.
Perth WA Meet 16th March 2008: Penguin Island A-Class Nature Reserve.
Be at the Ferry Terminal Cafe by 8:30am for the 9:00am Ferry Departure. You will need to be self sufficient (own water, food, hat, sunscreen etc). Snorkeling/Swimming there is fantastic. On Penguin Is. there is a Discovery Centre where you can have a close encounter with penguins, a shaded picnic area. No BBQ, cooking facilities or food sellers are on the island. There are centrally several located clean composting toilets.
There is potential for us to take a Penguin & Sea Lion Cruise for about $31.50 (adult price inclusive of Ferry to Penguin Island). The 45min cruise does not land on the Seal Island but would provide some good photographic opportunities if the weather is right. I propose we take the Seal island Cruise at 9:15am. The Seal Is. cruise departs from Penguin Is.
High Tide (1.5m) for 16th Mar is 4:30am and Low Tide (0.34m) at 11:40am.

There are no organizer's for the trip, you attend for your own enjoyment or be it risk. Do not attempt to walk it across to the Island - it's fun but can cost you your life. On Feb 3rd 2008, 28 people were rescued when they got washed off the sandbar.

G'day Wayne,
Count me in! I'm busting for another day out. I just got back from Pemberton yesterday and had a great time down there. I've neglected my photography for the last 12 months or so as we've been setting up a new company and my enthusiasm is back, and in spades. I'm sailing next Saturday and don't want to book up both weekend days but the weekend after you get back could be good, 1/2nd of March?
If there isn't much interest I'm still keen on heading down with you Wayne. I've still only got the 70-200 f4 but am hoping to buy a 1.4x TC, maybe this is the push I need!!
Paul
ps good idea, the old POTN Perth Zoo meet thread was getting a bit old

Hi Paul,
You won't need much longer than the 70-200mm for a lot of the photography. Most of the people I was with were using film cameras and 300mm at the most.
If you remind me before the excursion, I can loan you the 2x for the day.
I will be away for the whole 1,2,3rd March Long Weekend possibly inclusive of the Friday.

No probs at all, use of the 2x TC would be awesome if I haven't bought a 1.4x by then. Don't worry I look after my own gear very well and others even moreso!
We'll see if the others chime in and see if they have any preferences, I'm free pretty much all March and half of April, then heading over to Europe for a month.

Wayne,
Nice Idea to start another thread. We can probably organize something on one Sunday in the not to distant future. In March should be OK. It has to be a solid date though, as I have to roster it off work, and arrange transport up(get my license in May!! Can't wait). I'm doing my TEE this year, so you know, study and stuff may limit what I can do. But I am all for another meet, Penguin Is. sounds nice.
Cheers

Paul, just to let you know that the 2X TC will eliminate AF on the f/4L. If I come, I will bring along my 1.4X TC for you to have a go at, if I'm not using it.

I only spent half a day there yesterday, took about 450 shots and was back home by 2pm. I live 70km from the Ferry.

Not last year, was there in 2006. I was in USA last year for a couple of months for work though. We try to go back every 2 years to visit my wife's family and friends and her family come down to Oz every other year. Sick of it, nah not yet
We'll also be in France on the Somme for the first ANZAC day memorial outside of Oz and Turkey at Villers Bretonneux too

Doh! I forgot about that and I'm hopeless at MF. Thanks also for the offer, I'll look at getting one from B&H as I've bought most of my gear there, I'm so sick of Oz pricing!

If we aren't landing on the island, is a 70-200 going to cut it?

Hey guys,
All are welcome and the more the merrier. We've only had one meet so far so I guess we're all kinda new to it. Based on the info on the 1st page a 70-200 would seem to be fine and if I understand it correctly, the cruise would be in addition to visiting the island. Someone please correct e if I'm wrong.
Paul
ps, Welcome and we look forward to catching up.
pps 16th March works for me

We will be landing on Penguin Island and visitors can stay all day there if they choose. Seal Island is a special nature reserve and boat landing is prohibited. When I was there last, one could get very close to the island however.
A 70-200mm will be just fine on Penguin Is. I wish I had taken mine the other day.
Oh yes, newbs are welcome.

Yep, been to Hartland, I don't like them. Canon told me over the phone that they do the repairs there. But they sent the gear away and it took 6-7 weeks to come back.
Plus, be careful, the lady didn't know that Canon lenses carry an international warranty, and said they turn people away if they come in with an international warranty job. I had her call Canon, they set her straight.
I don't know how good they are at repairs at their place though.

Thanks for the tip.
I had a repair done about 6 weeks ago on my 400mm and they did just fine and took about 5 hours. The lady I spoke appeared to was pretty informed. I asked about body repairs and she said they do body repairs on the spot. \
Maybe some thing has changed?

Check out the website. They only close the side of the freeway (going from N to S) that the cyclists will be on. And definately all lanes - imagine mum, dad and kids cycling next to 120k/hr cars....messy!
I'll be going Stirling hwy, and along the coast, just have to leave home a bit earlier.
Weather - will trust it closer to the day, still a few more days for a cyclone to form and land up north!

I could have easily posted a lot more in the time a have been a member of POTN but i hope what I have contributed has been of benefit to all that have viewed or read my messages. I have learned a great deal from the forum, and will now go into print in the second great POTN book as n I have reached second place in the Urban section.
I also might take this opportunity to *ahem* [steps up to podium and flicks back hair] to thank the founders of POTN, all the current and past mods and member of the forum for this great mechanism they continue to support an maintain for the benefit of all [*fanfare commences*] who endeavor to pursue their love of photography whether it be for recreation or personal gain ... [la la la] we shall photograph them on the the beaches, in the air and on the sea [rhubarb, rhubarb, rhubarb]
Congrats on getting in to the book! Well done!
Now runs away, as I was a Panel Member of the book project and forgot to the the final round of voting. :(:(

oh well, by the looks of things, the others didn't have a chance in the Urban section anyway, I got a huge majority of the votes and the primary candidate got about 15% more than I - if I recall correctly.

Canon told me that the Osbourne Park location has closed down???
Only the repair facility. I think Osborne Park it just a distribution and sales arm. Quit unfortunate for such a large building.
I live few km's from the office and would appreciate it if they were more capable of doing more there!

Yeah thats correct about only the repair facility closing down.
They were more then happy to take my camera and ship it off to Sydney for me though.

Well we're on for Penguin Island tomorrow, and just wanted a quick check to see who's coming, mostly to make sure we don't leave anyone behind. Forecast looks good, a couple of showers but highly unlikely I'd imagine.
I'm planning on leaving the city area around 07:50, would that leave enough time?

I'll be coming.
Is there a chance a kind sould would be able to collect me from the Rockingham train station? With all the freeway closures I'm thinking it will be easier to train in from Wanneroo than use side roads the whole way.

I too think that showers will be highly unlikely. Some nice cloud cover would be nice to subdue the light some.
I drove to P.I. about 6 weeks ago down the freeway and from memory it took me exactly one hour from the Cedric St On Ramp. I just checked Google maps and when taking a non-freeway route the journey is approx 1hr 45min! Bloody heck!

Hmmm, okay. Will have to rethink this a bit. No probs though and looking forward to it.
I also got a 1.4x TC when in Singapore last week, all up including the tax refund it cost me about A$350 from Cathay Photo. Very pleased! About $100 cheaper than B&H, obviously I didn't need to pay any freight though. Will be glad to use it for its first outing.
Also, I'm heading in from the Maylands/East Perth area via the city so if anybody else needs transportation I'm happy to assist. Failing that I'll see you tomorrow.

Sorry Paul, I hope you were not the only on there.
I was making good time (surprisingly with the freeway closed) as discussed my car cut out in Kwinana. My alternator has blown and I have now had my car towed back to home.
Hope those that did make it had a good day.
Was sunny enough for me to get burned waiting around.

No probs Wayne and spewin' about the car. Michael, I hope you're feeling better soon. And.Duncan, where did you end up? Sorry there was some confusion
I met up with Yabbie (Alice) and her partner and had a pleasant morning. The light wasn't great and most of my shots suffered from camera shake, I need to get used to the 1.4x TC! I'll got through my shots and hopefully find something worth posting.
Lets hope things work out better for all next time and maybe we can start looking at another meet up mid year or so.

yes so am I. I have a 17 year old, but normally very reliable car. I know every bit of it, but some mechanics and electricians do not!
I was suspecting the alternator for a few months due to the fact my stereo would cut our every time I put on my high beam, or any other higher voltage equip, and the wipers were running really slow.
Even taking it to a battery/alt service place on Thursday didn't help as they said nothing was wrong with it after testing, though I knew it had to be the alternator.
I hang my head in shame.
I'd like to see some of the shots of PI of the Sculptures - both of which I have missed.

Hi Paul,
Checked your shots, they are pretty good, particularly the Juv Tern being fed.
Regarding your image sharing: with my Gallery provider (Fotopic) I need to turn image sharing on and use a supplied link code that is different from the most obvious code supplied. You might need to do a quick read though your providers help files for the answer. The problem does not lie on the POTN side of things.
Regards,
Wayne Eddy.

I'm thinking of heading out tomorrow afternoon (saturday) to do some landscapes. We will be meeting near UWA, does anyone have some good ideas for shots nearish to that area? I don't mind driving a ways.
Theres Kings Park not far, that cool boat shed near mountsbay etc (which I've never managed to get a picture of that I was happy with). What would you suggest shooting, and where from?
Also, If anyone is interested in coming along let me know, theres room in the car for +1 if we end up driving somewhere ;)

Cant beat Kings Park for a city shot at dusk or night time.
South Perth foreshore off Mill Point Rd looking across the water to the city for a city shot. These places are fairly bland during the day but come dusk with a few lights included make the shots look better imho
good luck and post what you come up with :)
