i'm thinking about getting a prime besides my 50 that lets me get closer to the stage. i'm normally the first or second person from the stage so im thinking the 50 may be too far of a reach. (havent tried it yet)

anyone have any pictures from a 30 that have been taken near the stage?
or from a 50?

or any other suggestions for that matter?

My first lens was a 30f1.4 - great lens on a crop camera in small venues with limited lighting.

I see lots of great shots of concerts taken with the 5D and 50mm. an it is pretty much the same Field of View as the 30mm on a crop camera.

I do some of my concert shots with the 50mm on my 5D (which is like the 30 on a crop, fov wise), but it's a bit wide for how I like to shoot (even from right up close to the stage), and I use my 85 1.8 and 200 2.8 a lot more. It's really good to have though and I wouldn't even consider going to shoot a concert without it.

i've been using an old manual lens i got with some film SLR equipment i dug out of my grandmother's basement a few months ago. i primarily use my nikkor-s 55mm f/1.2, but i also have a (manual) 50mm f/1.4. i found a pretty decent adapter online, so it fits on my XT perfectly, though i have to shoot in manual mode because the lens has an aperture ring instead of on-screen aperture control. works well for shooting from the crowd, plenty fast, and it's probably the lens i use the most on my camera, at least until i'm able to afford nice new lenses.

I use my 18-50mm f/2.8 for concerts at local venues. All depends on how much separation you're going to have from the stage. Bigger (more serious/higher capacity) venues tend to have a much greater separation between you and the band, so you'll probably use the 28-70 range for 'wide' and the 70-200 for closer shots.

For more intimate venues where you literally risk getting bumped into by the singer and other bandmembers, the 30 f/1.4 would be an excellent buy. It's not going to work so well in a venue that has you like 15 feet away from the stage. It's probably my next buy.
