I guessed gold finch or meadowlark then looked at the book and now I am stumped. The sun was so bright I didn't think of using a flash to fill in. Of course these guys would hold still with the sun on the front for a picture. Any help would be appreciated.

Nice looking bird, but I have no idea what it could be. Not a goldfinch. How big was it?

He was just a little bigger than the garden variety finch. Here is a poor picture from the back and it almost looks like he has horns. Devil bird?

I think you are right nwyman. Possibly a prairie horned lark. Thanks for the help. Glad it wasn't a devil bird. =)

Thanks Steve. You can't beat sagebrush for bg. I am continually amazed at the variety of birds in just this area.
