The Terns hung around the Skimmers and were pretty approachable, too. Somehow I only managed a couple of decent shots, considering that they generally just sat there and posed. At one point, at the Hawk Watch platform, we had a Caspian Tern flying around for hours, yet I messed up every shot somehow. I have yet to figure that one out.

Here's a few landing amongst the skimmers.

And 3 were nice enough to pose for me, all in a row. I actually have quite a number of these 3, and this is the closest they came to lining up their beaks.

And the middle one turned to watch me...

Couldn't tell you why, but I just love No 1. Thats the first bird pic on here that I've scrolled back to look at again, twice now.
Great.

They're great! :D

Terns are hard to get right.. I've been practicing for weeks and can't get the exposure right yet. The beautiful thing about Terns is that they're curious and won't be distracted from feeding. It really allows you to get close to them.

:)

Great series - what lens were you using?

I had the shokc of my life 2 weeks ago. I was travelling on the Mersey Ferry to Liverpool and an Arctic Tern came close in and 'surfed' our air current. I'd never seen one around here before. Didn't have my camera with me though.

#2 is my favorite. If they all did a 45 degree turn to the left it would be almost like a shot I'd take

Smudge, thanks. That's quite a compliment.

Dewmuw, this would have been the Canon 400 f/5.6. It was the perfect lens for the flocks of terns and skimmers. I don't think my 100-400 would have handled the situation as well.

Thanks folks!
