i have read the reviews for other brand named grips and most suck. are there any non canon grips that are worth getting?

You must have not seen the thread where the Targus grip snapped in half. I can't seem to find the thread now. But it was pretty long time ago.

Do a search in the forum for the Opteka grip. Lot's of members use them, with few complaints. I had one on my XT, and had no issues with it at all.

For what it's worth I have the Targus grip for my XTi and it works fine.
