I cruise through for "for sale" forum pretty regularly and have noticed that no-one wants to send stuff to Alaska. I'm trying to figure out why. Does that extra $5 make it impossible to ship to Alaska or Hawaii? Is because should someone get screwed over on a payment that you can't drive to these locations and collect? Anyone got any legitimate answers?? Just curious!!

I have an uncle that lives in Kenia. He is here visiting now as he does every year at this time.I'll ask him if he knows why.

I would like to know the answer also

Yeah, I'd just like to hear a resonable answer to this. I just can't see posting something for sale and thinking: "oh hell, I can't let this sell to anyone in Alaska or Hawaii!" Probably never get a real answer as to the "why's".

I hear 'ya. Try getting anyone (business, not individuals) to ship anything other than overnight or two day, as well!!

Why not? (At least to Alaska, they could!) =D

To Hawaii USPS "Priority Mail" works just fine and is far, far cheaper. It doesn't even take that much longer than it does to the lower 48. UPS and FedEx have equivalents (that may be called "ground") but get out here just fine as well.

Obviously, you've never driven the Al-Can highway.

Actually, a considerable number of places in AK cannot be reached by road, including the capital, Juneau.

And as they say, there's no place like Nome!

Well. I guess you CAN ship "ground" to Hawaii. I stand corrected.

Alright, heres my reason.

To clarify, I had never thought about this in terms of the forum community, simply because I have never sold anything here. I have been in buying mode of late. My frame of reference is ebay.

I only ship to the CUS on ebay because of lost package and return issues. I know, from experience, that dealing with the major carriers on things such as collecting insurance, arranging call tags, etc, can be a huge hassle. At the moment, I sell on ebay for distraction, not for another full time job. My first lost package (actually to Canada) took me nearly 10 hours to resolve. In the end, I decided it was easier to say "locals only" and perhaps miss out on some additional profit because I had eliminated part of my customer base.

HOWEVER, I will probably include Hawaii and Alaska on some POTN sales I will be posting. I can get a much better feel for who I am dealing with here, which will pacify some of my paranoia.

Its not a great answer if you happen to be the one who lives in Alaska.

Hey Matt, thanks for the input. I do appreciate it. That might shed some light on it.
