I need to take some photographs of Women in Manufacturing, and I have an opportunity to get some shots of some women doing welding... Mig/Tig...
what I'm wondering is... does anyone know if shooting the arc of an arc-welder will cause damage to the sensor of the camera? I know you can burn your retina, but don't want to damage the camera... thoughts/suggestions?
Thanks!

Basically no. Your shutter speed will be fast enough to not get blown out highlights. Just like taking a picture of a bright scene. However, the magnetic field created by an arc welding machine could possibly damage the circuits in the camera. One of the threads talks about a camera getting fried by being close to high power electrical lines.

You'll have no problem. Just make sure you use a protective filter. And when your shooting mig try and shoot from a distance. The splatter will melt your equipment.

I don't intend to get too close... want to capture the spray of sparks and such... just didn't want to have a bright white spot in the middle of every photo I took after that... :) thanks all!
