Took some night shots last night and noticed on a lot of my images blue streaks. Is this flare or dust showing?

Do those blue smudges appear in the same spot in all the images. Dust doesn't usually show up in colour :P

ALIENS!!!!!
Must be aliens. I'm calling UFO hunters. They don't show up in the same spot. Are being picked up int the dark sky--not always but usually around lights. I was using a small aperature with long shutter times (just fooling around and experimenting). This kind of leads me to believe its some sort of optics reflection. Another idea I had for possibility was that the camera (400D) had problems reproducing a certain shade of black. I thought someone with more experience would know right away.
Leads me to a question, with skylines at night where I want lots of DOF but want to minimize shutter time what's a good aperature? 7, higher, lower, etc?

All I can say is experiment!
Different lenses will produce different 'stars' around lights at different Apertures.
For my 17-40; I like F8
For my 10-22; I usually use F16
