I called Canon Technical Support yesterday to get an answer to the following problem:
I use two 550EX's and a 420EX in a portable lighting kit. I had been using ratios set on the master. This works well. To simplify things a little, I wanted to set FEC independently on each 550EX instead of using ratios. The Manual says you can do it, as do a number of articles I've read on it. I set both 550's to ETTL, Slave on Group B. Unfortunately I kept finding that the Master setting kept over riding the setting on the slave. With the slave on +3FEC and the Master on -3, very little light from the slave.

I called Canon and the first rep I spoke to, insisted that it was not possible to set FEC independently on each flash in ETTL and that the Manual doesn't say that it can be done. Unfortunately I couldn't find the two sentences on page 70 that says you can and that was the end of that call.

I went back to the Manual, found the two sentences and called Canon back. The second rep also insisted it couldn't be done. I directed him to the two sentences on page 70. He was perplexed. He had very limited knowledge of how to set up the 550EX or use it's menus. Over the next hour, I walked him though the 550EX settings (to his credit he set up two 550EX's and a camera) and he was able to reproduce what had been happening to me. He didn't have a clue as to why. I then had an idea (it happens occasionaly). I asked him to change the Slave Group between A and B. Low and behold, we had an answer. It seems that you can only set FEC independently on each flash if they are both on Channel A, Master and Slave. Neither he nor his supervisor could explain why. We spent about 90 minutes on the phone. I would have thought they should know how to perform a function listed in the Manual.

I am greatful that the rep took the time to set up my scenario in his work area. I am however troubled by the fact that neither rep knew that the 550's had this capability and insisted that they didn't until I showed them in the Manual. The second rep, while willing to help and recreate my scenario, had little working knowledge of the 550EX and I had to assist him in how to set up the flash.

In case anyone is interested, I was eventually able to set FEC individualy on each flash as long as both are in Group A.

Scott

Sounds like the same level of technical support I get from Sprint, Microsoft, Dell, Epson and others. It's only rudimentary knowledge on their part and anything beyond that is held in second and third tier support. Any more when I call Sprint I just ask to be transferred to the third tier support by asking the same question that got me there in the first place. Sorry state of affairs, but that seems to be the "standard".

Well done, Scott ....

Now, .... can I call you instead of Canon tech support when (and if) I have a problem ??

I don't think those reps have the knowledge.... I don't even think it's a job requirement. I think they just use "predefined" answers to frequently asked questions, or a book/software of guidelines. When someone comes along with a more speciffic not so frequent question like Scott here, they're lost.

Gotta get the phone number from Canon's engineering dept

Well as far as technical support goes, it's always a tough situation for the company providing the support. The Peter Principal certainly applies. Once the support rep has reached an experience level high enough to be proficient, he's off to do something else until he's reached his maximum level of competancy. Therefore we can assume that most tech support reps are not the most talented guys in the company, and they're never the best paid.

If I was a professional photographer and had a choice of making $100k / year or go be a great tech support guy at $33k a year, guess which one I'd choose?

One of the first times I went to B&H I was talking to the salesman who was quite knowledgeable, as are many of the sales reps there. He was a professional photographer. I asked him why he was working at B&H. He responded, "I have to eat." It helps to have a steady gig while searching for that pot of gold.

I was very interested in the Canon Wireless TTL system but wondered if Aunt Gertrude's point and shoot flash would trigger my slaved 420. According to the tech guy at Canon Canada any other flash would trigger my slaved 420.

He of course was completely wrong.

But then again there's nothing, NOTHING!!! in the 550/420/10D instruction books that tell you how to use ratios with just two flashes. If you read the 550's instruction it implies that you need to use the 550 as the master and at least two other flashes in order to get the ratios. Of course all you do is to set the 420 to group B and the 550 will default to group A and you're in business.
