I have installed the supplied software (I have a PC running Windows XP), but when I plug the camera in via the usb lead the camera immediately goes dead. I can find no way that will persuade it to download images. In the end I gave up and bought a card reader. This is much less satisfactory (I used to download my pictures direct off my previous Canon camera and prefer doing it this way).
What am I doing wrong? Help!

I have the same problem. It simply did not work, the only possibilty is using USB (SDHC) adapter or using Linux (Debian).

Try plugging the camera in and then restart the computer....
then the computer should recognize it as a drive...
but...using a card reader is much faster.....shooter

With the G9 turned off, connect the USB cable to the computer and the G9, then press the Playback button (just above the LCD display to the right. That will start the download program.

Will the camera turn on at all when plugged in? If the camera is able to be turned on, and you just cant get the images. Try another image reader on your Computer, like windows view (i think its called) and click import image or find.
if that doenst work, and agian if your cam does turn on well plugged in, try clicking your start button, select "run"then click "browse" in the browse menu, select "my computer" the camera may appear as "mass storage unit" or "canon" and the name of the usb port its plugged into. i belive windows has a fast click link to my computer in the start menu.
have you tried another usp port? it maybe a bad port.
if you have a printer that has a usb port, you maybe able to import threw that. But thats really slow i hear.
ive also heard, if you click the "print" button on the camera, it helps, but agian this is if the camera is even able to turn well plugged into the camera.
