View Full Version : Triggering a 10D with Pocket Wizard--which cable?

I want to trigger my 10D using a Pocket Wizard. There is a remote connector on the 10D, which I assume could be used to trigger it, if only I had a compatible cable. I've tried paramountcords.com, B&H, and even checked several local camera shops, but can't find anything that makes use of the remote connector.
Has anyone done this?

Are you talking about the connector for the RS80N3?
What about this from Canon?
If Paramount doesn't custom make it, it probably doesn't exist.

I believe you want what Pocket Wizard calls a pre-trigger cable. This (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=198049&is=REG) should do the trick. Even though the description doesn't list the 10D, the 10D has a N3 connector. I personally haven't used it, so YMMV.

It says for a D30...same release as the 10D?
BTW, never thought about using mine for this purpose. My black PW-Plus is not as clearly marked for using it on a camera as is the (newer?) blue one.

That's a motor drive cord. It should work, too. The Pocket Wizard-branded version is here (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=192960&is=REG) . AFAIK, the difference between a pre-trigger cord and a motor drive (a bit of misnomer for DSLRs) cord is that the pre-trigger cord can simulate a half-button press. A half-button press serves two purposes: 1) it prevents the camera from going to sleep (easily prevented by disabling the sleep timer), and 2) it avoids the delay from autofocusing.
It says for a D30...same release as the 10D? Yes.
BTW, never thought about using mine for this purpose. My black PW-Plus is not as clearly marked for using it on a camera as is the (newer?) blue one.
I think the newer ones are blacks; the older ones are blue. Anyway, I don't have mine in front of me, but I think the receiver has two ports and one of them can be used to the trigger a camera.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. It looks like either a pretrigger cable or a motor cable would work for my purposes, though I probably don't need the added features and cost of the pretrigger cable.
In my searches, I did see mention of the "Pocket-Wizard CM-N3 Motor Cord 30th Anniversary" (whatever that means) and according to B&H it wasn't supposed to ship before October 11. I see on their site that the CM-N3 is currently out of stock.

I have Pocket Wizards and the Pocket Wizard CM-N3-P (804-511 part number) Pre-Trigger Motor Drive Cable, which is listed for the EOS-3, EOS-1V and D2000. I use it on my 10D. I use either the Pocket Wizard transmitter to fire my camera or my Sekonic L-358 with the Pocket Wizard transmitter in it. Both work equally as well.
I went with the pre-trigger because there might be times when I'll have the camera set up on a tripod for a long time waiting and I didn't want to take the chance it would go to sleep and I'd miss the shot. The only thing I've not cared about is it's hard to tell if it's taken a picture if you are far enough away and can't hear the shutter. But it works pretty good.
