When I first posted some go kart photos on fredmiranda, an FM veteran shredded, and I mean SHREDDED my photos. At first I was furious someone would be so rude. It bothered me so much, my thoughts were so intense, it took me hours to get to sleep that night. The next day I went back to the kart track, and took new photos to show him I could do better. About halfway though shooting, I realized what he had done. He lit a fire in my @$$ that made me go out and try harder, I thanked him later that evening. He knew exactly what he was doing, he said I was welcome.

I'm not that rude, but I am going to be honest with you, these don't do much for me. But, I see amazing potential in your first image. It's not a scooter and an Infinity at a stoplight, its not a fire escape, it's not a Chihuahua cautiously inspecting a horse. It's a real moment that you captured, now go find more, and emphasize it as much as you can. There is a lot more you could do with the processing that could help bring out that moment, but the most important part has been done by you already, kudos. Make sure you follow up those moments with a smile, and a wave.

And of course, thanks for sharing!

I myself like your first and last pictures very much. Nice captures.

I think they are all good photographs, especially considering that you are a beginner. The first two in particular I think could be cropped to emphasize the subjects.

That first capture is great as you don't immediately see the little girl; you are at first drawn by the traffic lights to the right. The second one has an amlost comical contrast in its subjects. The third one is a worthy subject, but would be a lot better with some more directional light, so a different time of day, or different weather would have helped you there. The fourth one is also a great capture and also quite amusing. I love the way that they are both using their ears in the same way; both of them on high alert as they meet!

Keep up the good work. You have definitely got a good eye, so keep on learning with the rest of us.

Thanx mike.
Everything u mentioned is the same i seen in these pictures myself.
I thought the second was funny, sitting this little sccooter next to a huge suv grill.

But i guess everybody sees different things in photography and thats why i love it.
I appreciate your comment since i thought i was either going crazy or cedew was just having a bad day.
Thanx again.

Wow, I honestly did not mean to offend you. Perhaps I didn't convey my thoughts properly. Please accept my apologies. I think I assumed that since you were using a 30D, you were serious about photography, and not just using it for snapshots, these are good snapshots. If I came across rude, I certainly didn't mean to. Even reading what I wrote again now, it doesn't look insulting at all to me, but that may just be my callused perception. Again, my apologies.

Cedew, what you said came across fine to me. Because you explained it in advance I could see that you were just passing on the same form encouragement for Chomish that worked for you. :-)

I would have got annoyed at the first stage though (the bit where you got shredded at FM)!

FM has a way of doing that to you... shredding your shots.. yet leaving you with so much energy to do better next time its unbelievable.

I honestly post here first and see what i get then if its good.. i post it in FM. (Not many make it there :P ) I'm still learning as well.. but its damn intimidating posting over on FM.

to the OP: i agree 100% with what cedew said. i think you have a great eye for photography, i just think you are having a hard time getting your images to convey what YOU saw in the image when you took it.

I have that same issue. oh well, just read and learn and shot and learn and read more and shot more, and hopefully i'll learn more.

looking forward to more of your pictures in the future

That FM-style crap doesn't work with me. I don't agree with adopting that attitude towards beginners. With me 'tough love' will only get you a knife in the back further down the line, when you are least expecting it.

Cedew u in no way offended me. if i didnt want peoples opinions i wouldnt have posted them in the first place.
I appreciate u sharing your experiences with me and what worked for u.
I do have tons to learn and hopefully will get better with time.
I used alot of sarcasm in my reply to your post and u recieved it differently then i intended it.
I do agree with u 100% though and appreciate what u had pointed out in my pictures.

I still cant sleep though. HAHAHAHAHA.

Thanx again all for the pointers.

I liked the first and last shot. Focusing more on the boy hiding behind the window would have been interesting. Makes you wonder, what he's doing.

The last shot has some empty space on the left of the photography.

The colors seem a little dull. Are these straight out of the camera? Maybe use some photo editing software to increase contrast and add some saturation.

Great start. Don't get down over comments, one person might love one picture and another might hate it. There is no right or wrong when it comes to photography.

Funny you should see the child as a boy. I looked again and I think you're probably right. When I saw the photo the first time the story I told myself about the photo said it was a girl. Now I'm not so sure. :-)

I've always found the difference between the feedback here and the feedback on FM fascinating too. Shots that get 'WOW' or 'great shot' here, I have had ripped to shreds on FM. I must say I like a bit of both.

Having said that, to the OP, you have to accept that these are not very good photographs. However, having said THAT, each one shows its own little grain of true potential (well, except the second maybe).

1. The boy in the window is wonderful. The rest of the frame is all useless junk. That image, if composed thoughtfully, could be very powerful. I didn't even really notice or focus on the boy until the other posts pointed it out - that's how distracting and unnecessary the rest of the frame is.
2. This shot is crap, I'm sorry, it's some cars stopping at a traffic light, shot from the sidewalk. Really got nothing positive to say here.
3. Now we're talking, there are the beginnings of very effective composition here. Try moving around a bit more as you do your photography, you'll find new and exciting perspectives. The stairs lead your eyes through the shot nicely, and it's quite well composed, but it needs a focal point and I find the perspective boring, as it's the normal standing while walking down the street perspective - get high, get low, but whatever you do, try other angles other than standing height.
4. Cute moment, but too snap-shot ish in its composition. I think if shot sideways on (so having the dog and horse parallel to your plane of focus), this image could be very strong and adorable at the same time.
