I had a ringlight made from Pvc pipe, but it seemed to fall apart when ever I tried to move it. Anyways, my husband is a heating contractor and was tired of hearing me whine about it. He decided to make me a new one out of sheet metal. Here are some photos of the light and a test pic. Now to get myself in focus...that will be the next thing I will be complaining about! I guess I'll just have to practice more.

LOL I agree, unlike the DIY beauty dish I just posted, which most definitely will elicit a 'WTF is that POS' reaction

yup, some times when customers see shooty equip they thing your work will follow. But some customers know as long as it works it will work. I love ring lights and almost made my own but I found for about $100 I can have one and a strobe all in one

The only problem I have with the open multiple bulb ring lights as they throw little shadows in every direction instead of having a smooth halo. Of course, you have to be close to a background for that to happen. Nice result there.

wow, that is an excellent ringlight. The photo is superbly lit.
Ask him for the specs and let us know how to make it (if youd like)! :D

When i was looking at the initial pics of the ring setup it seemed like it couldn't be very effective without a reflective surface wrapped all the way around the outer and inner rings to direct the light all forward. (hopefully that makes sense) The example photo you've shown us has clearly turned out very well, so I guess directing the light all forward isn't as important as i thought. Although it may help with the issue that Village_Idiot brings up of to many individual light sources.
Have the lights been hooked up to a dimmer? If not it might be a good idea in order to have control over the amount of light being given off.

yes, they are connected to a dimmer, even though I haven't found a reason to use it yet. :)
