I have a Canon A400 as my first digital camera, and so far pretty good. Certainly a very impressive piece of machinery for less than $200.

My problem is that the flash always goes off, even when taking pictures outdoors.

When I depress the shutter button half way, the indicator light goes yellow.

I would expect it to be green when outdoors, and for the flash to remain off.

Most likely I have tweaked a setting incorrectly when I first got it, but I can't figure it out.

Can anybody suggest some likely settings that might cause this problem.

Thank you.

Make sure you have the flash set to the lightning bolt with the A and the camera will decide when the flash is needed. I you have it set to the lighting bolt only, it will fire all of the time.

Yes it sounds like you have put the camera into 'flash always on mode'You may need to change it in the settings.Either just switch to auto mode or alter the flash settings in the manual mode menu if you prefer to shoot that way.

Auto flash mode also has its flaws on some cameras. Sometimes the flash goes off even when it is light enough, so the best thing to do if u decide its not needed is to remove it completely. Not sure on the format of this camera but usually canon cameras it looks like a lighting bolt or an "A"
