Will be shooting a night game (college softball) would like some help from any member. Question's are, WB auto or ?, iso, 1600 or 3200. My plan is to use the 70-200 f4 (best lens I have) at f4 for the game. If you can help I would appricate it greatly. Thanks in advance:), Pete

This is tough to say exactly w/o seeing the field myself. If f4 is as fast as it gets, you'll likely need 3200 unless it's really well lit. As for WB, auto will probably get you by with nice results but if you can take a custom WB from the field (have the batboy/girl hold the card out on the field before the game starts if they do it without getting in anyone's way) I'd do that.

Thanks for your comments. I've shot there only during the day. Again my thanks. Pete

or shoot RAW, set a custom WB, and only tweak when you get home if need be. setting a CWB is so easy that it doesn't make much sense not to do it. Pete, if unsure how to set one, just post back and I'll be ahppy to walk you through it.

pretty straight forward but many ways to get it done. I'll give a method or two for on the fly solutions. If you have a gray card, we'll sue that, if not, the palm of your hand will do (you can also pick any fairly neutral tone that falls in the same light you'll be shooting but remember, your camera wants to make it all 18% gray so be careful in choosing). It doesnt matter what wb mode you are in really and I almost always (unless i forget) shoot at 1/60th or below. This is really a habit from shooting indoors but applies to your night game since lighting cycles and that speed or slower will account for the frequency at which it does. Next, switch the lens to manual and blur focus on the subject (palm for instance). This too is not imperative but will only help. Shoot a few shots making sure to fill the entire frame (or at least the spot meter circle which you should use for this exercise). No you have an image or two to choose from. Go to menu, and select Custom WB from the first screen. It will ask which image to use and simply select the one that looks most neutral. Select and menu out. Now in the WB setting on the camera, select the goofy looking thing that is custom wb. Your manual has a picture as I can't really explain what the symbol looks like. Thats it.
Another option is to simply set temperature. and use K in the WB setting on camera. You adjust the color temp in the menu as well. I'm not as fond of this as I am guessing too much so I stick with method one. It may seem like a lot of steps but honestly, it takes less than 30 seconds start to finish once you've done it once or twice.
Hope that helps Pete. Good luck.

Thanks so much, I have grey cards from before and will give this a go. I went out to the field tonight and shot a game (still DLing at the present). Just shot with AWB and high ISO with a wide open lens (f4). Will post some soon. Thank you again for the help. Pete:)

These are a couple of images from last nights, Texas vs Texas State game. This is my first attempt at shooting a night game. Used a 70-200 f4 lens, camera (30D) set on av mode 95% of images shot at f4 and iso 3200. I did some PP in Lightroom to reduce nosie and increase contrast. Wanting to learn so if possible, C&C would appricate your comments. Thanks, Pete
