S5 IS RAW?

Hi everyone! This is my first post on the forums. Anywho, I was doing a bit of reading and I read that some people we're "hacking" there S3's so that they shot in RAW mode and stuff. I've done a decent bit of researching an I haven't been able to find a hack for the S5 IS which is what I have.

I like the camera a lot and I thought it would be really neat to use RAW. If anyone has any info, that would be greeeaat!!! Thx! :lol:

I am not sure what your saying to tell the truth, I have a S3 IS and it can shot in RAW and many other modes.

The S3 does RAW via a hack; that's still being ported over to the DiGiC III processor of the S5.

Sorry still do not understand as my S3 takes photos in RAW, without any hack, the RAW mode is on all S3's.

I think you have it wrong wayne. Not sure about your s3 but it is not something that comes standard on any of the powershot s-series.

Wayne, I think you are mistaken. The *.raw file extension can not be seen on your camera and you even need special software on your PC to see the picture. Are you *sure* that this is the case? Assuming you have the Canon Powershot S3 IS, it natively compresses the pictures into JPEG. You need the CHDK hack which can be made to be semi-automatic at startup of the camera.

Please excuse my ignorance, as when I heard people say they were shooting in RAW, I thought they meant they were shooting in manual mode, as if you read and study all the S3 does, you will know it can do a hell of a lot.

Well it’s better to show my self up here than in real life chatting to some camera buffs, sorry all.

So please what is the advantage in shooting in RAW, could anyone show my a photo, one in JPEG and the same in RAW.

the advantage is more control on your photos as raw does not apply any of the camera jpeg conpression features like white balance, sharpening, contrast etc etc...its exactly what the camera sees. You can add these compressions yourself when you edit the raw file to a jpeg. Since there is no compression, no data is lost...the raw file is normally 2-3x the size of the highest jpeg. My 20D shots 3-4meg jpegs and 8-9meg raw file, depending on the shot of course.

I had a A570 IS with the CHDK hack and was able to shoot raw (*.*crw) however, my camera would shoot a both jpeg and raw so you can see your shot on your camera after you take it. The Camera itself will not show a .crw file. Even your computer will not see that...even with the Canon Raw plugin. This is because unless you camera is meant to shot raw (CRW) it will not be a registered file type. This means you will need to convert that CRW file to a DNG file and open that with Photoshop.

Thx for the reply highlife, and it was a very good explanation, now I understand, as I have a S3, will have to find out how to do this now, thx again.
You know I hope they bring a S6 out with 12 Million P’s and a real battery.

My pleasure, i had this all in my mind still when i had my 570IS with the hack. Did tons of reading on it.

If you want to shoot RAW (*.CRW) you need the CHDK hack...just go here (http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK). This is their site...find the one for your camera...load it onto your SD card and you ready to go. This is not a firmware mind you, you will write NOTHING to the camera as all the files are on the memory card.

Like i said, i used it with my A570IS and it was GREAT...live Histograms, DoF calculator, live blinkes and on top, ability to shoot *.CRW. As i said before there is 2 caveat for this all. Since your camera doesnt natively come with raw, you will be writing a unreadable version of a .crw file. This means that you need to get a free program online (look on wiki CHDK site, its listed there) to convert it to a *.DNG file. This will be able to be opened in Photoshop to adjust the white balance and what not. The second issue is, since you will be shooting raw and your camera will not read it, you will need to shot *.CRW and a Jpeg. IIRC my 570IS *.crw file size was approx 15megs, on top of the 3-5meg jpeg. This will fill up your memory card FAST.

PS, you see me use the term RAW and CRW. These are both pretty much the same thing, just different file types. CRW is Canon Raw and RAW is basically just that...i think Nikon has their own version of RAW also. This is just FYI.
