Hi,
I am new to photography and need help for taking sunset pict.
I put the camera in landscape but do not have good results. Maybe the light is too low and I should expose but how do I do it? (I have a tripod)
So anyone care to give me a step by step guide for taking good sunset or sunrise...
I have a newly acquired PowerShot A85
Thanks for any help, JCT

Paul,
I sure would like being able to take pict like your 0602 for example!
Do not be afraid to send your advices, from my newbie point of view they certainly will be useful.
JCT Hoping that my FrenchGlish is acceptable...

That picture is a bit tricky. Looking at the hour when it was taken you can easily imagine that at 20:00 at the end of august it was not quite sunset. Any way the sun was low enough that in that moment was just dissapearing over the hill. The picture was taken , off course in counterlight and using manual settings. I lowered the shutter time to 1/500 and close up the apperture to minimum. These settings gave me an sunset appearence but to get that red color of the sunset I have changed the white balance to get those colors. That's all. Two real sunset images are in the Germany gallery.

OK
I did not knew you had changed the color after taking the pict.
I would prefer to know how to take a real sunset like your 012 or 013 from Germany gallery.
Sorry for the trouble I give you.
Thank for your patience, JCT

For the others, after finding a nice sunset you have to block the flash, close the aperture and choose a small enough shutter time. That's all . Do you have some of your tests posted anywhere to be seen ?

No I have nothing to show for now.
So I use Av & Tv Modes and adjust until I get Aperture and Shutter speed in white when I press the shutter button halfway and that's it?
Weather is not very nice for now but at the first occasion I will try taking a pict. of the sun going down or up :-)
Thanks, JCT

Do you have manual mode M ? If you do use it. Don't stick to have a white indication ( corect exposure) since the sunset and sunrise are not normal landscapes. If it indicates under exposure, no problem, only check the LCD to have an image that you like. [/quote]
