They happen. I took back a camera because I founda few hot pixels on my LCD (one very close to dead). I got a brand new one to find out that it had pretty much the same hot pixels just in a different place on the LCD.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. You can always clone it out or otherwise clean it up in Photoshop. Plus, if it gets unbearable or it gets worse, you have a one year Canon warranty.

why would a dead pixel show up in a picture?

- I'm not sure I follow the question. Maybe you are speaking of the difference between dead and hot pixels. What you are seeing in the above linked thread is a group of "hot pixels." If I counted right, he's got about 8 of 'em there. I think I have ~9 on my DRebel. Dead pixels should most definitely show up on a picture. If a pixel (or group of pixels) is truly dead, it will show up as white always. So, if you are taking a picture of a white wall, you *might* not see it. But, if you are taking a picture with a shadow in it or the night sky, it will show up as a white spot on your picture.

The difference would be, if it is on the CCD, or only on the LCD screen on the camera.

In the first case, it would logically show up in the picture when you look at it on your PC or print it. In the second case, it will only be visible on the camera LCD, but not on the PC.

You'll have to download a picture and look at the picture.

Best regards,
Andy

Accoriding to the Canon manual, a dead lcd pixel (or even a few) is not considered warrantiable. However, when I bought the G3, I returned 3 of them for that problem. The store had a no hassle return policy, so I made use of it.
