You have a lovely grandaughter. People have told me not to take pictures of people so near a tree. They talk of balance, things appear to grow out of the person. But I still do it. I like the tension. I think that if you set your camera to AV mode and opened your apeture almost all the way (or try all the way as well to see if you like that) you will find that only your grandaughter is in focus and nothing else will distract us from her, or any other grandchildren ;-) Jim. But please understand I'm not an expert, just trying to help.

I like your frame, but the trees and background take up too much of the picture and distract from your grandaughter. I think I would have zoomed in a little closer to her, as long as there was nothing in particular in the background you were trying to include.

Hi
I completely agree with Jim.
Fourty years ago I took what I still think was a wonderful back lit shot. The subject was sitting on a plow -- lost in the woods !, and streams and rays of Autumn light enveloped the somewhat angelic scene.
I entered the shot in a a photo club review. The judges response was; ". .. the shoe is not bad, but it would be much better if the camera had closed in on the subject's face! So that is my advice here.
I have no interest in the houses and fence lines. Crop it down to:
the face, or
head (face and hair) + upper shoulders, or
Head + mid-body and up.
You too, wnat to see the girl. Crop your shot and you will be amazed at the improvement.

Thanks, guys for your comments. The pic was taken at Heritage Park Island here in Cerritos in So. California. It was remodeled recently and reopened this year. I was taking pics of the new facilities that day and was taking a pic of the covered bridge and stream when my she ran by. I stopped her for a quick spur of the moment pic. Here is another pic of Heritage I sland Park taken at sunrise this morning against of the silhouette of a replica of Old North Church. Any comments on this one? Thx...Harvey
