There is something strange in this pic...
The back lines are brown while the front ones are black...
I can't remember if the zebra was like that or if it is a problem with the camera (DRebel, 70-200 4L). What do you think ?

On second thought, you're probably looking at your basic mixed-light scenario with the warmer light on the zebra's trunk.

That's why we buy expensive photo equipment - to check out and complain about bad lighting conditions.

I don't think it's light... notice the black hairs beneath the brown. I think it's just an ugly damned zebra.

Foals have brown stripes, that eventually develop to black. Looks like you caught a teenybopper zebra.

Don't ask how I know this.

Looks like a zebra mated with a wildabeast.

I think its just dirty because the white stripes have a brown hue to them as well...

plus the greens in the background llok consistant from left to right so that tells me its not the cam or the lens. its just a a dirty zebra.

it was prolly rolling around on it back or something...

My guess is either lighting or photoshop magic. The shadows behind the area of the zebra which is brown, have a brown hue as well. As I said this is just a guess.

In any case, It's Ugly :(

Er... this is a joke right? :?

Essentially.. no Zebra has any pure black. The Zebra in your photos looks just like every Zebra I've ever seen.

But you all knew this.

The zebra shots that I have don't have what could be called Brown. The stripes look black to me in my photos.

And zebras aren't ugly!

I'd say this zebra's black stripes are about as "black" as the lens this photo was taken with is "white".

here is the jpeg file directly extracted from the raw file

The reason that it does not look like every other zebra is that there are at least two species of the animal. This is a Burchell's Zebra, which has wider and fewer stripes. The other kind is the Grevy's Zebra, which has narrower and more numerous stripes, and also has a pure white "L" underbelly.

I won't call them damned ugly... just damned wierd looking... and no decency either ( http://www.tofuboy.net/upload/photos/DSC00051.JPG a photo my friend took), lol.

I think you should take this pic to canon and demand a new camera

More seriously-there's nothing much wrong.
This one is just odd coloured -extremely likely for the reason brandon says-it's still young and hasn't fully coloured yet
It could also be a dietary thing

"cams got legs!"
isn't that wizzard of id?? :)

Actually after some extensive research, the American Zoological Society says that this particular zebra is 'damned ugly.'

I hope that settles it. Nobody can argue with the American Zoological Society.

I come from a country where there a millions of zebras - Tanzania. I have seen zebras with brown patches. They are normally black but they get their brown patches after they have had a suntan
