View Full Version : Is it worth it to keep my S30 along with my DRebel?

Before I bought my DRebel, my main camera was a Powershot S30 (which I still have).
I have heard many people on the boards talk about owning or buying a smaller camera...something of a point and shoot camera for those types of occasions.
Thing is that I honestly don't really enjoy taking point and shoot type photos. I would prefer to use my DRebel for all occasions that I want to shoot.
Plus, I think my grandfather would absolutely LOVE that S30. He doesn't have a digital camera yet, and the S30 is a great starter camera. I'd sell it to him pretty cheap (including three CF cards).
Honestly, I see no reason to keep it. But, I have a feeling that some of you that have been in the DSLR world longer than I have felt the same way. Then, one day, you wake up and realize how nice it would be to have a smaller camera for this certain occasion even if it wasn't as functoinal as your DSLR. So, I want to hear what you all have to say before I sell the S30.
Thanks

Try to keep it along your new DRebel for some weeks.
Many people never touch their P&S cameras again once they have gone DSLR. Others find the new equipment a bit cumbersome to lug around and like to 'slip the P&S into the pocket to go'.
You might not know now into which group you fall.
On the other hand, if you know it will make your grandpa happy, go ahead and give it to him. Christmas is just around the corner
Best regards,

When I bought my 10D I had the same thoughts .. would I still need to keep my S400. I use the 10D for all my 'quality' shots .. where lens changing and decent flash are needed .. but I still find a real need for the smaller P&S as it fits in the pocket .. can be used at crowded events, and is so useful I would be yearning after a replacement had I sold it.
So my answer is yes .. keep it

I agree 100%. I sold my P&S when I bought my 300D, and now I regret that move. I love to hike, a lot of it above treeline, and I am getting so tired of lugging a DSLR and lenses with me all the time. Time to look for a new P&S.

I bought S30 first, then 300D. I passed my S30 to my 5 year old son. He love taking photos and sometimes he would join me for a photo shoot day. This is his very first photo:

Chets,
you can tell your son that he is a talent!!!
I very much like his photograph.
(Maybe you print it at 8x10 and frame it for his room  )

I sold my Sony P&S about a month after I got my 300D, a decision I now regret. It was so handy to take anywhere/anytime to the degree that I'm now looking for another P&S.
I'd say keep it for a couple months and if you haven't used it by then, then you should know what to do with it. For the first month or so I was happy to take my 300D everywhere but it wore off after a while. Don't get me wrong, I love my 300D and won't get rid of it until I upgrade to a 20D or whatever comes after that in a year or 2 but it's just not as convenient.
my two cents

I have a G3 (which I had before I got my Drebel) that stays in my car because I don't want to lug all the SLR stuff with me all the time. I use it whenever I need to.
But now I find myself wondering whether I should get an s400 or the like as well so I can stash it in my pocket.
It never ends...

I think I've found a reason to keep my P&S camera. When I work in the office, I work at a location right outside of what used to be a military base. It's fairly wide open around here, and there's a well kept golf course right across the street. I walked out at lunch today and saw a beautiful sight filled with an open field in the foreground, trees changing color in the background, and the sky was filled with broken grey/white clouds. It would have been an incredible shot...and I don't feel comfortable leaving my DSLR in my car all the time. But, my S30 will be coming with me to work everyday I come to work now.

There you go - rationalization, justification - the first steps in acquiring the addiction. Sooner or later, the letter 'L' will become significant, and then...
