Post 'em up guys, I wanna see pics taken with a Sigma 15mm diagonal fisheye.
***EDITED FOR CLARITY***
Because this thread is for the lens archive, please only post pics from the Sigma 15mm Fisheye lens.

Probably not worth using on a crop camera. Same problem with my 16mm Zenitar -- nice with 35mm film but just not very fishy on an XTi.

If you're looking for a diagonal fisheye on a crop camera, there really are only two choices, and both are pretty good:
Tokina 10-17 fisheye zoom. Excellent image quality, excellent build, and being able to zoom a fisheye can come in mighty handy. While it's a true 180 degree fisheye at 10mm on a crop camera, it keeps that 180 degree fisheye status for all other formats too...it's got full coverage and full width at 12.5mm for 1.3x users, and it works just great on full frame between 15 and 17mm. (I have taken shots with it on my film body at 15mm, and they look fantastic.)
Here are two recent shots at 10mm with mine (both on my 30D):

http://www.jordansteele.com/images/recent/inner_harbor.jpg
The other option is the Sigma 10mm f/2.8 fisheye. It's newer, so there's less people who have used it but it looks good as well.

What's the big diff between diagonal and the circular and don't say one's diagonal and the other's circular. :p
tiktaalik
17th of February 2008 (Sun), 20:52
A circular fisheye creates a circular image within the frame and gives you a 180 degree field of view in all directions. The diagonal one fills the image frame and gives you 180 degrees FOV only along the diagonal.
http://www.pbase.com/image/92437596/large.jpg
The outer image is the view from a circular fisheye. The view labeled 10mm is the view from the diagonal fisheye for crop cameras.
(And yeah, I'm way behind in posting images from my Sigma 10mm. Hopefully tomorrow.)
Jman13
17th of February 2008 (Sun), 20:52
Diagonal fisheyes are 180 degrees from corner to corner, and they fill the frame...there's no black edges. Circular fisheyes create a circle in the center of the frame, surrounded by black, and are 180 degrees all around.
In my view, diagonal fisheyes are pretty versatile if you know what you're doing. Circular fisheyes are pretty specialized.
_aravena
17th of February 2008 (Sun), 20:58
Ah! So Tokina's 10-17 is? Some pics I've seen don't seem to have those blacked out areas.
tiktaalik
17th of February 2008 (Sun), 21:00
You only get the blacked out areas on circular fisheyes (4.5mm and 8mm). You won't get that with the Tokina (on a crop body) or the Sigma 10mm.

Ah ok. Makes my interest in the Tokina more hyped.

Thanks for the discussion on the other lenses guys. I know about the other lenses, but this thread is actually for the lens archives so these pics from other lenses, while very good, are a bit off topic compared to actual 15mm Sigma lens shots. Anybody else have pics from the sigma 15mm on either a 1.6, 1.3, or 1.0 sensor'ed camera?

I bought a used one here on potn, I picked it up from the post office earlier this morning. My initial impressions are very positive. The dof at f/2.8 kind of adds another fun flavor to a fisheye. This lens is plenty sharp wide open. I think the fisheye effect is just about perfect for me on my 1.3 crop 1d. Sigma's hsm would have been nice, but definitely not required for a lens like this. It's a little slow when you're trying to stick this thing in your pets face, and they keep moving around, but I didn't buy it for that. I picked up a used Canon EOS 620 film camera to try it out on a "full frame". Anyway, after playing with it a little bit, the sharpness alone is enough to keep me happy with it.

Most seem to say its just as good or better. The big advantage of the Sigma is the closer MFD, IMO.

just got it this am so my only chance for a few test shots came at lunch. no offense to the ladies, but the first one made my crack up (not sure what I mean? check the sign near the top). All on the 1DMII (1.3x). No real edits other than some default ACR capture sharpening.

Well, I got a chance to actually use my fisheye for one of the first real times since swapping my Tokina 10-17 for the Sigma 15. So far I'm pleased with the switch. The Sigma 15 isn't sharp ALL the way to the very corners, but it's sharp at the edges, and the Tokina doesn't quite get there on full frame (though the edges and corners were great on a crop). Quite pleased with the color, sharpness, and CA/fringing control, and most of all, the flare control, which is very good.

nice Matt and obviously you are getting the hang of it. I assume you didn't de-fish that image and if I'm right, its a great demonstration of how a FE can function as an UWA (with better edge sharpness) if proper technique is used. Keep it up man!

15mm isn't really all that fishy on a crop, you'd probably be better off with the Tokina 10-17 or the sigma 10mm if you want the true fisheye look. There is a diagram somewhere in either this or the Canon 15mm thread that shows what the crop looks like for each different sensor size.

I received my Sigma 15mm today. I am impressed.
It is faster than I thought and I love the width.

Full frame has more of the Fisheye effect, the cropped sensor looks like a ultra-wide angle with a slight FE effect.

So I started having a problem with my 15mm fisheye. The aperture would stick closed down periodically while shooting. making everything dark when i looked through my viewfinder. Sent it in and was told it needed a new aperture housing which sigma no longer makes....FAIL. Looks like I will be in the market for a new fisheye. Thinking to Tokina 10-17. I'm using a 1DmkII. This sucks. Really liked this lens.

Just sold mine. The AF was just too sporadic on mine. However, I do miss the lens as it had character unlike my others.

Same thing happens to mine, but I just give it a smack and it goes back to normal. I can live with that.
