Hi All

I was checking out another video link and this was linked from it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1aKxAN7bAs&feature=related now some of the responders think this is a fake but just look at the damage it took and still flew

Yup seen it. Israeli Air Force FTW! Best air force in the world.

And no, it's not fake. I remember it was on the news when I was still living there.

Thanks for the feedback.

I wonder whether such an incident influenced the development of one of the more recent models that look more like a "lifting body" shape? Also is the F-15 of the generation of warbirds that are 'inherently unstable' that need a computer to fly, if so could that also explain how the pilot was able to keep control?

Fairly certain the F15 is NOT fly-by-wire...

One of my favorite military clips, amazing skill by the pilot :)

I could be mistaken, but I could have sworn the new F-15I, or "RA'AM" (Thunder) as they code-call them in Israel, is either a fly-by-wire, or has been improved by the Israeli Aeronautical Industry (AIA) to be one.

The pilot flies the machine through an analog electronic "fly by wire (FBW)" system. It's actually a hydro-mechanical control system. http://www.f15sim.com/operation/f15_hydro_mech.html

I heard a story from a Colonel when I was at Lackland for training this past summer about his test pilot days where he sheared a whole wing off doing a manuever and landed it. Amazing planes.

It is VERY real and after analysis it is felt the only thing that kep it flying was the sustained high air speed. Very fortunate airmen there.

Thanks... Interesting link. But as regards the post I originally replied to, the F15 is not prone to becoming a ballistic "flying brick" if the electronic fail. It is not inherently unstable requiring computers to even fly.

There is a line in the "Linkage Diagram" box that mentions how the control surfaces will default to "in trail" if the "brain" fails allowing the pilot to remain in flight and fly using trim. A truly unstable "Fly By Wire" aircraft is rendered uncontrollable without the CPUs and the only option then is to "step outside."

The incident was real, the still pictures are real and that pilot has some grand skills.

The Video clips that show an F-15 landing with one wing was altered. They had no video of the actual plane landing with one wing.
