This is somewhat along the lines of the thread of where are you from.
There are an quite a few people on this board that have user names that lead me to believe they do photography on a pro or semi pro level (Joe Schmoo Photo Dude). However, they never publish a link to their work. Why is this?? One would think they would want their work viewed as much as possible.

I have noticed that too. I like looking at pro's websites as I think it can help me learn more.
Maybe the people who do that are just aspiring to be pros?

O-kay,
I look at it the other way around entirely. A pro is making $$ for there images,. they are surrounded by it and getting "satisfaction" for the wark they do.
It is us amateurs that wish to have some form of feedback and or even a pat on the back for the images we are trying to make.
A pro allready has that satisfaction covered with the "paying gig"
No need to garner reinforcement on a forum.. they have the best reinforcement coming to them allready in the form of a check.
Just my 2c...
P.S. though I am by NO means a pro.. I find the desire to run home with images and quickly get them uploaded to share has long since dwindled.
I love taking the images, and I love printing them and sharing them... but as far as getting them uploaded to a gallery and posting in threads.. the urge to do that is less and less.
I don't know if this is related. :?

My thoughts exactly!

Don't forget a professional photographer may not even want a web site, after all, a web site is only an electronic brochure, and not all people want to bother having a brochure.
Having an internet connection does not mean they have a web site to go with it...

My guess ....
... not all photographers are also avid website designers ...
... photography is maybe not such a 'global' business that a website will bring a lot of additional business. Most photographers I know have some glass window with photographs on display to impress potential customers that are local and maybe do not have internet access. The potential extra business might not be worth the cost for a flashy website.
Best regards,
Andy

A photographer who is in business to make money may not wish to be linked to a forum that displays more information of him/herself. I don't want a potential client who "Googles" my name to find my photography site, to come across a forum that I frequent only to be directed to a thread displaying my views and thoughts on any particular topic. I also do not want people looking for my business to stumble on more information in this forum than I would have intended for them on my web pages.
I personally wish I had thought of these things 2 years ago.

Conk:
I can't imagine what a person might post in the forum that might shed an unfavorable light on them to a potential customer. Nonetheless, it still advances a reasonable argument in favor of using aliases for those to whom this might be a concern.
