No duties on camera equipment (because of NAFTA).
Only GST, and sometimes PST.

Actually ALL GST and ALL PST.
I believe the PST is charged based on the province the item enters into Canada and not the destination.

If you use UPS be ready to pay a large brokerage fee which will likely be the same as the total taxes. Best bet is to get Fedex/Purolator. There is one UPS method that doesnt have brokerage, but forgot which one.

I have reverted to saving my money, spending $100 on gas and picking it up instead of paying $300 in taxes and shipping. Besides, no better excuse for a roadtrip!

Why wouldn't you pick your flash up from a Canadian Shop, I really don't believe that you would save that much by buying your gear from the USA.

Right now it's cheaper to buy most camera gear, especially Canon right here in Canada if you shop around a bit I'm sure you wouldn't spend any more than if you were to send your money down south.

I AM CANADIAN!

That's just plain wrong. Are you sure it was duty, and not some sort of taxes.
I've purchased lots o stuff from BH and Adorama, and I've only paid GST until the last item, where they finally also charged PST.
They tried to charge duty, but that was a mistake. I called Canada Customs and talked to the top dog, and he said "THERE IS NO DUTY ON CAMERA EQUIPMENT FROM USA".

As Persian-Rice stated, NEVER use UPS! They will charge ridiculous brokerage fees. Use Fedex, or US POST.

If you have any doubts, call Canada Customs at 1-800-461-9999.

When B&H first switched from FedEx to UPS I was very concerned, mostly because UPS has no official UPS service here (Nova Scotia) and relies on a local "we deliver if we feel like it" firm.

As you mentioned the first problem was the custom brokerage fee, but the guy I spoke to at B&H assured me that they had taken care of it and they did. The trick is to let UPS be your broker. If you become your own broker (and there's usually a phone call to ask you) then the fees can be huge and I suspect they are set at whatever the broker seems to want.

With FedEX it was seemless and the last stuff I ordered though B&H/UPS went well. It is very much in B&H's interest to get this stuff to us as cheaply as possible, assuming that it doesn't come out of B&H's pockets. Why would B&H want an extra charge placed on their product that doesn't profit them, but pisses off clients? So as I say it seems to be fixed.

What I was a lot more concerned with was UPS's policy that they could just leave stuff at the front door if their driver deemed that it was a "safe" neighbourhood. I had ordered a monitor calibration spyder and five pro packs of 220 Fuji film and discovered them sitting by my front door (in the sun by the way) at about 6:30 in the evening. Now I got home at 5:00 and it wasn't there. At 6:30 it was. So the "UPS" guy didn't even knock! What really scared me was that two weeks before (FedEX then) I ordered a 16-35 & the 70-200 f2.8. Had the delivery team been been UPS, those lenses too would have been left at the front door. I really like that the decision on this point was made by some minimum wage moron who obviously wanted to do something else.

When I wrote to B&H & UPS they just said that this was the policy. It completely enraged me because I could only imagine the dog and pony show that would be next on the agenda, if someone had ripped off the package. I would say I didn't get it, which would be a few day later. The delivery guy would say he did deliver it, and away we'd go. B&H assured me that they'd make good if that happened but a signature - a stupid signature - would have solved the whole problem. Even if they did make good how long would this take? And extra two weeks? A month?

So if I was making a purchase from B&H into this part of Canada that was more than a few dollars, I would specifically ask if the policy remained the same, and if it was I'd think really hard about using Adorama and FedEx.

You CAN use FedEx with B&H but because it's not B&H's main carrier any more you pay a fortune for shipping. FedEx is Adorma's main shipper now and the FedEx fees are low while UPS's are high over there.

No kidding!
I once ordered some expensive computer equipment online. When the delivery day finally came, I wondered why no package.
I went out to check my mail, and there is this huge brown box leaning against my door...in an apartment hallway!
Actually, if I was evil, I could have phoned and said that I never got the item, and made them pay for another.

This is slightly off point but check TigerDirect.ca first. They ship from Canada and I got a great price on a one gig 40X Lexar a month ago.
